$100M Boost for Canelo Alvarez as Terence Crawford Fight Gets Canceled

After years of anticipation and months of planning, we are back from where we started. Just when it looked like the dream fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford might be happening, everything came shattering down. The Ring Magazine updated the news through social media last night, crashing fans’ dreams and making them wonder about the future of the match-up.

Since the disappointing announcement, fans have been pushing a theory that we might actually get the Jake Paul fight at least. You see, for the past few days, rumors of an agreement between Canelo Alvarez and Jake Paul regarding a fight in May have been gaining speed. While the fight does not add anything positive to Cinnamon’s legacy, financially it makes all the sense. Since the rumors began floating, insiders have been predicting how this fight can break every record financially. On Wednesday, Matchroom head honcho Eddie Hearn, who has promoted eight of Canelo Alvarez’s fights, also jumped on the bandwagon.

Terence Crawford still not there yet, says Eddie Hearn

In a conversation with IFL TV, Eddie Hearn accepted that while the Terence Crawford fight will be far superior in terms of quality and boxing skills, financially speaking, “Jake Paul fight” will trump it. According to Hearn, “He(Crawford) doesn’t yet have the profile of some of the greatest names of the generation,” something which he should have by the way.”

Meanwhile, Jake Paul has already proved that he is “a massive draw. What was it? 80 million accounts watched his fight or more with Mike Tyson,” exclaimed the Matchroom promoter. For Hearn, the Canelo-Paul bout might be even bigger. Even though Hearn believes that this fight will be “the end of Jake Paul,” in the end “does it really matter?”

“I mean there hasn’t really been a star as it’s just been crazy,” stated the promoter talking about the star power of Jake Paul. In the end, “There always becomes an amount, and this isn’t just in boxing, there always becomes an amount of money where the answer is yes. Always remember that,” stated Hearn emphatically. For Canelo Alvarez, the amount of money that the YouTuber can provide is simply insurmountable to where Canelo has to say yes. “I mean my guess for the number for that fight is somewhere between 60 and 80 million for the whole fight,” and with that amount of money, there is no way that anyone would deny a fight like this, added the British promoter.

Eddie Hearn believes that this clash can break all the previous records as he began to predict just how massive this bout can be.

Canelo Alvarez’s big payday

While Hearn accepted that the financial payout for this fight would be different than it was on Netflix for Paul’s last fight. “It’s not a pay-per-view.” However, “if it’s on Amazon Prime, it would be pay-per-view and with DAZN.”

Hearn does not know how exactly if it will pan out, “but the fight does, on pay-per-view at $90, the fight does potentially 2 million buys which is $180 million of revenue just for just TV revenue not closed circuit not the gate, the gate’s another 30 million, right, you are looking at over $200 million of revenue for that fight.” Even if we cut all the percentage of the broadcasters, the fight can generate “$200 million,” in revenue according to Eddie Hearn.

The Matchroom promoter believes, “In my opinion, he(Canelo) will earn more than Jake Paul, but even if it was a 50/50 split,” both fighters will take home $100 million easily. The unified super middleweight champion has been targeting that 9-figure payday for a long time.

Now that the Terence Crawford fight is canceled, it won’t be a surprise if Canelo Alvarez announces his next opponent as Jake Paul for the $100 million payday. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts down below.
