2025 Chevron Championship: The Club at Carlton Woods’s History & Significance Explored

The 2025 Chevron Championship will return with a lot of fanfare and star golfers, including the defending champion, Nelly Korda. For Nelly Korda, however, The Club at Carlton Woods served as a stepping stone in her 2024 season. The World No. 1 registered her fifth win in the 2024 season on the golf course and followed it with two more wins in the following months. But what’s going on with the course hosting the 2025 Chevron Championship? Here’s everything you need to know about The Club at Carlton Woods.

Named Top 200 Best Residential Courses in America by Golfweek, the development of the golf course at Carlton Woods began in 1998 when Jack Nicklaus was contracted to create what would become the best golf course in Texas. On June 5, 2001, Nicklaus played the inaugural round on his new course, coinciding with the approach of tropical storm Allison. Despite the weather, he completed all 18 holes. Following its opening, the Nicklaus course quickly gained recognition, earning the ranking of the #1 private course in the Greater Houston area by the Houston Chronicle.

The Club at Carlton Woods saw a major event on March 29, 2023. Then, Carlton Woods celebrated the grand opening of its new clubhouse with a black-tie event. The clubhouse featured dining options, private dining rooms, a fitness center, and locker rooms. The fitness center officially opened on August 28, 2003.

Essentially, Jack Nicklaus designed The Club at Carlton Woods as a private golf course featuring 18 regulation holes with a yardage of 7,407 and a par of 72. The course includes 419 Bermuda fairways and TifEagle Bermuda greens, along with a driving range. The Club at Carlton Woods has hosted prestigious events such as the U.S. Junior Amateur, Women’s State Team, LPGA Tour events, and various women’s major championships, including the Chevron Championship.

The Chevron Championship’s history with The Club at Carlton Woods is pretty recent. The LPGA major moved from Mission Hills Country Club to The Club at Carlton Woods in 2022. Then, Chevron, the LPGA, and IMG announced that the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course would host the major championship from April 20-23, 2023, and the tradition has followed into this season as well. But did you know The Club at Carlton Woods holds another special golf course?

The Tom Fazio Championship Course at Carlton Woods

For Tom Fazio, the history at Carlton Woods began in April 2003 with the development of the Tom Fazio Championship Course. The Carlton Woods saw a 500-acre expansion of the Carlton Woods community and held a soft opening of the Championship Course in October 2005. Finally, in 2006, the spectacular 18-hole Tom Fazio Championship Course was completed, resting atop 7,358 yards of rolling hillsides on the bluffs of Spring Creek.

This lush course offers a thrilling experience with dramatic slopes that embrace the natural features of the land. Ranked as The Best New Private Course in Texas by Golf Digest soon after its launch, the Tom Fazio course held the prestigious 2024 AJGA Boys Invitational. So, what does this Tom Fazio course offer alongside the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course? Quite a lot.

The Fazio course features dramatic movements among the fairways and putting surfaces, making it a standout in the region. Complementing the Fazio course is a Spanish-style clubhouse, the perfect spot to enjoy a post-round beverage while admiring the sweeping vistas that characterize Fazio’s signature design. The grand opening celebration for the Fazio course in April 2006 featured five days of festivities, marking a significant milestone for the community.
