The league is entering into heavyweight mode. A player will test his fate in the coming draft that might give an illusion of being a sumo wrestler. The Florida Gators defensive tackle, Desmond Watson, weighs 464 pounds. He is a force of nature on the gridiron. Standing tall at 6-foot-6, he is taller than the average DT in the NFL. But fans, scouts, and teams are concerned about his weight. No one can ignore the sense of strength he brings with his big size. Even the player knows it, and he is confident of getting selected.
Appearing on the April 5 episode of Nightcap with Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, the college player discussed his plans. He revealed his stance on managing his weight and said, “I think losing weight, you know, definitely put me in a better spot for sure. But I think, you know, I can play but at the same time, I want to do something if I get there. So, I think being lighter helps me.”
Sharpe even enquired if he had ever been 500 pounds in his life. Desmond Watson denied this with a smirk on his face. But yes, he acknowledged he had been working hard to lose weight and has also shed 30-40 pounds. Despite all the attempts, he has gained weight in his college years.
When he stepped into the college program, then-Florida coach Dan Mullen called him a 385-pound athlete. The DT measured 415 pounds as a sophomore, 435 pounds as a junior, and 449 pounds last season. So, he has been gaining his strength. If he gets selected, he will be the heaviest player ever in the NFL by a good margin of 80 pounds.
Offensive linemen Trent Brown and Daniel Faalele are the heaviest players to date. Both weighed 380 pounds. The 49ers drafted Brown in the 7th round (244th overall) of the 2015 Draft. The Ravens drafted Faalele in the 4th round (110th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft. So, Desmond Watson is significantly ahead of them from the weight perspective. But despite being so big, he is pretty athletic.
Desmond Watson stuns NFL scouts at Gators Pro Day
The Gators held their Pro Day on March 27. And the NFL world was abuzz with rumors of potentially the biggest NFL player ever running on the field. His athleticism was impressive for everyone. The league didn’t invite the DT to the Combine, so he came with a vengeance.
Desmond Watson had 36 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. It was more than anyone managed at the NFL combine. He then excelled in the vertical jump with 25 inches and completed the 40-yard dash in 5.93 seconds (unofficial). That comes to around 13.8 mph.
Gators coach Billy Napier also praised the athlete for his impressive performance and said, “You’ll go the rest of your career and you’ll never be around a guy that’s that stature. And then you get to know Dez. He’s extremely intelligent. He’s got a great sense of humor. He was a great teammate.”
Most analysts have claimed Desmond Watson to be a late-round pick or an undrafted free-agent rookie. He is confident that he will find a buyer in the draft. Things are spicing up as we approach the 24th of April. Are y’all ready for this year’s ground-shaking Draft?
