In his HOF speech, Kevin Garnett expressed his “only regret with Minnesota is I didn’t get to bring a championship.” The 21-year-veteran played 14 of those seasons with the Timberwolves and 12 of those came in his first stint. During that time, in 8 seasons, they qualified for the playoffs and he earned the coveted MVP trophy. His connection with the franchise is still strong, and they have been demanding for his jersey retirement. And it seems the honor may finally come for The Big Ticket.
“A little birdie says Kevin Garnett will become part of the Timberwolves’ front office as soon as it’s official that Lore and Rodriguez get ownership.” Long-time local insider Charley Walters (Pioneer Press) updated the fans on the potential executive role up for grabs for KG. The development takes place as an arbitration panel’s ruling cleared the way for Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore to take control of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx from Glen Taylor.
Kevin Garnett in May had hoped for this outcome. “I fu– with A-Rod and them, man. What they’ve built in Minnesota, the energy, and this team taking on [Anthony Edwards’s] and [Karl-Anthony Towns’s] personality bro, A-Rod and Marc built that sh–, man.” Although KAT is not part of the franchise anymore, KG could find his spot. But there still could be a potential hurdle in their way.
As per Brian Windhorst, the MLB legend, A-Rod has to go through a voting process. “It’s going to come down to a vote of the owners. Lore and Rodriguez have the money,” The ESPN senior writer also mentioned that for the sale to go through, the duo requires three-fourths of the NBA owners to co-sign. Despite the final confirmation, the fans are already celebrating and cheering for Kevin Garnett and there is a reason for it.
Kevin Garnett and his ‘hate’ prevented the honor
The 15x All-Star already had his jersey retired from the Boston Celtics. But when it came to Wolves, KG declined, “Glen knows where I’m at, I’m not entertaining it. First of all, it’s not genuine.” He pretty much made it clear that until and unless Glen Taylor is the majority owner, the jersey won’t be hanging in the rafters. That’s why a fan added, “He really didn’t fw (fu– with) Glen Taylor lol.” Since Taylor is currently on his way out, fans want to celebrate Kevin Garnett.
“First things first. Retire his number and build him a statue!” The sentiment from the fanbase is not wrong, as the former forward led the Wolves to eight consecutive playoff appearances. How can one forget his MVP season numbers of 24.2 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists. That is why another netizen added, “Finally they can get that Number 21 in the rafters too.”Previously, there were reports about Kevin Garnett being part of the ownership group. But the talks fell through and the former champion had few words for Taylor.
“Sooo just got the news that this process in trying to acquire the TWOLVES IS OVER for me and my group…Thx Glen for being yourself n what I Kno you to be!!! GOOD LUCK n aww the best with WHAT WE BUILT.” Knowing this a fan commented how differently, the Karl-Anthony Towns situation would have played out. “He woulda never traded KAT. Time to retire his jersey and build a statue.”
When The Big Bodega was in his rookie year, Kevin Garnett was his vet, and they still share the bond. Wolves faithful have been waiting for the jersey retirement of #21 for quite some time now. But it was the Celtics who had the privilege to do so, as KG won a championship there and was part of the Big 3. “About fu–in time or the Celtics was gonna do it.” The timeline for the sale is not concrete yet, but the love from the fanbase for Kevin Garnett is.
