Track and Field Fans Frustrated Over Top Names Abandoning Events As Grant Holloway Hailed As Exception

The USATF Indoor Championship had fast become a killjoy for track and field fans. Many big names had chosen to opt out of the event before it even started. But there was one guy who remained. That is none other than Grant Holloway. He was duly rewarded for his stance as he became the 60-m hurdles champion on February 23rd with a time of 7.36s. But this wasn’t the end. There’s still more.

He made a bold claim with the words, “For me, when I’m out of the sport, I want to be done. I don’t want to have that back-and-forth,” said the 27-year-old hurdler. “I have a solid four years in this sport. I want to give it everything I’ve got.The man is doing exactly that. The victory granted him his fifth U.S. championship title and he now holds five indoor 60-meter hurdles wins and two outdoor 110-meter hurdles wins.

But with this, Holloway has his sights set on securing a historic and unprecedented hat-trick of consecutive world indoor titles in the 60-meter hurdles during this upcoming month. The event has seen his undefeated record extend beyond ten years. Holloway aims to make history and everybody recognizes how determined he is to reach that goal.

Popular YouTuber and pundit Erin Brown posted something interesting on X on February 25, 2025, that really got people thinking. She said, “I hear everyone saying, ‘Oh, I’m not going to world indoors because I’m getting ready for outdoor worlds, or it’s not worth the money, etc.’ Literally, why is Grant going then when he 1?” As a true fan, Erin made sure that the world knew why Grant was staying. After all, a competition is a competition irrespective of the prize money involved. And Grant wasn’t one to leave it

Her tweet further emphasizes that Grant had no real reason to stay other than his passion for the sport. The tweet further mentions, “Has all the money already, 2. Has the titles, 3. Is better in his event than the people opting out, 4. Olympic & World Champ, 5. Running the same outdoor championship as everyone else and will more than likely do better than everyone opting out…??? If Grant can do it, why can’t you??” It’s a great point. After all, with all the big names leaving the competition in the name of conditioning, it seems rather fickle.

Yet one of the modern greats himself is competing in it without any of the complaints. Meanwhile, athletes like Noah Lyles, Christian Coleman, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Masai Russell have all chosen not to take part, leaving fans disappointed by the absence of top talent. If Grant Holloway, with all his titles and accomplishments, can keep going and pushing for more, why can’t everyone else?

The man is setting the standard for what it means to go all in. On February 23, 2025, Grant Holloway called out USATF for charging fans to watch the National Indoor Championships, a shift from the tradition of free access. The Olympic 110m hurdles champion wasn’t happy with the change and spoke out for fans who’ve always been able to watch without paying.

A broadcast crew was ready, but details on how to watch the event were unclear. Journalist Jonathan Gault revealed that USATF.tv redirected viewers to a pay-per-view site charging $9.99 for parts of USA Indoors. The audience expressed dissatisfaction, after which Holloway immediately criticized the decision.

After hearing the announcement, Holloway pressed his dissatisfaction through X to advise fans against buying the pay-per-view as he anticipated YouTube and Twitter would post the fight footage for free. “If you plan to watch the USATF Indoor Champs, consider waiting for it to be posted on Twitter or YouTube instead of paying for the PPV,” he posted.

He further continued, “It’s surprising that we can’t watch our own championships live, which is definitely an area that needs improvement.” Despite his frustration with the changes, Holloway still showed up to race. With several athletes opting out or withdrawing, fans took sides, and many found themselves rallying behind Holloway.

Grant Holloway’s dominance has fans asking—who’s next?

One fan put it simply: “Grant isn’t human, dawg.” Another added, “I think Grant is looking to add to his resume/legacy… Wants to be the GOAT. That requires medals and titles… Extend his winning streak… These are things that require a trip to China. That’s where he is at this point in his career. Few are in this position.” And you know what? They’re right!

Holloway is operating on a whole different level right now, and he’s not slowing down anytime soon. When it comes to dominance, Grant Holloway is in a league of his own. His 68-win streak in the 60m hurdles is unmatched, with his last loss back in 2014. He just picked up another victory and is now aiming for his fourth world title at the 2025 World Indoors in Nanjing.

Oh, and let’s not forget, he’s already an Olympic gold medalist in the 110 m hurdles from Paris 2024. The man is collecting titles like it’s second nature! Joining Holloway on the world team will be Cameron Murray, who also had an impressive showing in the Men’s 60 mH Finals, clocking a personal best of 7.41 seconds.

The top results were as follows: Holloway (7.36 seconds, tying the world lead), Murray (7.41), Johnny Brackins (7.43), and Cordell Tinch (7.48). Other notable performances included De’Vion Wilson, Dylan Beard, Louis Rollins, and Connor Schulman. With such a stacked field, Holloway is in good company as he continues to chase more titles.

One fan nailed it: “Because Grant is an animal. This is a performance sport, not a skill one like basketball. Injury prevention and loading up for outdoors is the priority because that’s where the lights and money are at.” And that’s exactly the mindset Holloway has—he’s not just about dominating indoors; he’s setting himself up for even bigger wins.

As another fan said, “Let him cook ’cause y’all claim to want to save the sport but refuse to line it up indoors.” Talk is cheap, but Holloway’s out there putting in the work and showing how it’s done. “Grant’s out here grinding while some of y’all act like ‘saving the sport’ means skipping the action. Put up or shut up.” The conversation around saving the sport often revolves around viewership and money.

Many athletes only get attention during the Olympics, but when you get a chance to make history, why wait? Track and field don’t have the same clear pathways as other sports—there’s no draft, no built-in system to get noticed. It’s not about waiting for your shot; it’s about creating it—Grant Holloway’s got the formula down, and it’s working. If you’re not showing up, then don’t be surprised when you get left behind!
