After two decades of redefining greatness on the WNBA court, Diana Taurasi is officially calling it a career. The W’s all-time leading scorer, three-time champion, and one of the most feared competitors unveiled her decision in a recent interview with Time. But while she’s retired, her legendary career is far from forgotten, and Geno Auriemma has an apt description.
No doubt, Taurasi’s impact on both professional and collegiate basketball is undeniable. From leading UConn to three straight national titles to dominating in the WNBA and then internationally, she’s done it all effortlessly. “For as long as people talk about college basketball, WNBA basketball, Olympic basketball, Diana is the greatest winner in the history of basketball, period,” shared Taurasi’s former head coach. “It’s a life that is a novel, a movie, a miniseries, a saga… Until someone comes along and eclipses what she’s done, then yes, she is the GOAT.”
A 20-year career draws to an end, leaving the court void of one of its most fierce competitors. Indeed, the legacy is going to be hard to meet, but for Taurasi, that’s a conversation for another. With retirement, her focus turns to her family.
