With Retirement Looming, Tony Ferguson Updates His Future at GFL After Leaving UFC

Despite the unceremonious nature of his UFC departure, Tony Ferguson left Dana White’s promotion as one of the best 155-pound fighters MMA has ever seen. He may not have become the undisputed champion, but he held the interim title once, etching his name in the history books. However, ‘El Cucuy’s MMA endeavor hasn’t come to an end yet, and at 41 years old, Ferguson seems to have one last goal before he calls it a career.

Fans were expecting Tony Ferguson to retire after he removed one glove after his final UFC fight last year. But what they didn’t expect was for ‘El Cucuy’ to join the competition, the Global Fight League. Taking a unique approach to the fight game, the GFL has given shape to skepticism about their roster, which is mostly filled with elite fighters of the yesteryears who’re past their prime.

Despite the noise surrounding his move to GFL, Tony Ferguson has made it clear that he has joined the rival promotion with the intent of becoming the undisputed champion in the same division he competed in his UFC career. “‘Best Of All Time’ Ewe [You] Don’t Even Have A Clue’. I’m coming After this whole lightweight division. #GFLChamp,” Ferguson wrote on Instagram.

The GFL will be launched a couple of months in April, and while we don’t have any details about when Tony Ferguson will fight, we can assume that it’s going to be around the same time. What we do know is where ‘El Cucuy’ will get inside the cage. Expecting fans to turn up, Ferguson revealed that California is the venue. “I’m fighting in LA I expect all of Ewe [You] to be present….. Los Angeles Here We Come,” the former UFC star added.

While fans are waiting to see what they’ll get from Tony Ferguson’s new MMA home, Dana White had some really tough choice of words for the GFL. Let’s see what the UFC CEO had to say.

Dana White doesn’t rate Tony Ferguson’s new workplace highly

The UFC CEO is pretty aware of the noise GFL is making by splashing the cash on the fighters, which isn’t something Dana White is worried about. If something benefits the fighters, it’s all for the better. Many former UFC stars like Chris Weidman, Andre Arlovski, and the aforementioned Tony Ferguson, just to name a few, have joined the ranks in the GFL, which could help garner fan attention. But White doesn’t really think that his new rival has anything better than them to offer because the 55-year-old is competing with the big leagues.

“I think these guys are blowing real cash, I mean these guys are throwing a lot of money around and I love it, good for the fighters, it’s good for them,” Dana White stated during a Power Slap presser. “I don’t know anything about their business plan or what the deal is but no, I don’t consider any combat sports my competition. My competition is the NFL, College Football, Soccer, big movies that come out on Saturday.”

Well, Dana White may not have a high opinion of the GFL, but these words may not be able to rattle Tony Ferguson, who’s hellbent on achieving that undisputed champion status even though is a new promotion.
