It can’t be easy to play for the current iteration of the Chicago Blackhawks. After being in a quasi-state of rebuild for over 5 years now, it’s no wonder that fans are concerned for the team that won 3 Stanley Cups in five years. The Hawks of today are a far cry away from the Hawks of the early 2010s. And even their current silver lining, Connor Bedard, doesn’t seem to be helping to turn things around.
Bedard, the player who the Blackhawks picked first overall in the 2023 entry draft. Their beacon of hope. However, despite being an exciting, up-and-coming player, he is just one player. And it can’t be easy, playing on the second worst team in the NHL this season.
In their last game against Utah Hockey Club, the Hawks were narrowly defeated 2-1. Aside from suffering yet another loss, a lot of the focus was directed at Bedard himself, who was captured staring ahead vacantly while sitting in the penalty box. Gino Hard shared the clip on X with the caption, “Someone please ask Connor Bedard if he’s okay.”

Speaking on his performance, Blackhawks interim head coach Anders Sorensen said, “When he was at his best, he was around the net a lot and winning a lot of pucks back. We saw that last game. He needs to play to his strengths. He’s best when getting pucks off the back wall and getting them to the net.”
Although Connor Bedard had a game to forget, so did the rest of the team, who are sitting dead last in their division, with little chance to move up. And with only a 3-point lead against the San Jose Sharks, it wouldn’t take much for the Blackhawks to find themselves dead last in the entire league. So, the current state of the team, coupled with the above clip of Bedard, has left fans sympathizing with the 19-year-old.
Fans are feeling pity for Connor Bedard
With only one and a half years remaining on Connor Bedard’s 3-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, fans are doubting his long-term commitment to the team. “He’s gonna be out after his ELC over lol.” With the trajectory that the Hawks are on currently, it is no wonder that they could lose their young star so soon.
Another fan jokingly commented, “He looks like he saw something he shouldn’t.” With a disappointing performance reflected by the Blackhawks players, Bedard certainly looked like he was done with it all.
But the jokes made at the Blackhawks’ expense didn’t end there. Another social media user wrote, “He would’ve been better in Anaheim or San Jose.” While these two teams look to be as bad as the Hawks on paper, the situation certainly looks more positive at the moment in California.
However, another fan sensed opportunity in the situation. “Hes gotta come home and play for vancouver,” read one comment, presumably written by a Vancouver Canucks. Fans of other teams must certainly be licking their lips at the opportunity of stealing away Bedard from Chicago once his contract is up. “Counting the days until he’s a UFA,” wrote another netizen.
And similarly, one fan suggested that Connor Bedard must simply be sick of playing for the Hawks. “He’s tired of losing. He needs to get out of Chicago.” A perfectly valid assessment, as no doubt morale and energy must be down in a team that has had so little success in the past 9 years.
For now, though, there’s not a chance that Chicago trades the player they hope to build their franchise around. But if they cannot get their act together, there’s a strong chance that Bedard leaves and the Hawks find themselves in an even worse position. But, and there’s always a but, the Blackhawks have another chance of scoring big in the draft lottery this year. And the last time something similar happened was when the Hawks acquired Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. And well, we all know how that turned out. Can history repeat itself?
