As the month came towards the end, Barkley took the time to share his own experiences that awoke him to black history and its importance. But who helped Chuck discover his culture?
In a recent interview with WBRC 6 News during the Remembering Black History with Charles Barkley segment, he shared how these lessons still guide him. “My grandma is the first person who ever said, ‘Hey, you need to learn about Nelson Mandela.’” Her influence pushed him to take pride in his heritage while also recognizing the contributions of allies. Moreover, Barkley recalled the words of Dr. C. Vivian, who reminded him that many white individuals stood alongside Black activists during the civil rights movement.

Beyond honoring history, Barkley is committed to uplifting future generations. His work with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) stems from his belief in economic empowerment. “I want those kids to get their education… so they can control their economic opportunity.” He acknowledges that racism has always existed, but he also points towards a deeper issue—economic disparity. “America’s rich people screwing poor people,” he stated, arguing that wealth inequality affects people of all backgrounds.

Charles Barkley’s Unexpected Gesture Toward San Francisco
Another example of Charles Barkley’s outspoken nature is his words expressing his feelings towards San Francisco. From calling it “rat-infested” to making sharp remarks about its homelessness crisis, his words have sparked outrage. Barkley held such strong opinions about the city that he had even planned to boycott this year’s All-Star Game there. However, surprisingly, the NBA Legend surprised the fans and attended the event.
Although, to no one’s surprise, his appearance was not welcomed by the people. When he appeared on TNT Tip-Off, the crowd made their stance clear, booing him relentlessly. Even when he tried to express support for the city’s homeless population, the hostility didn’t fade.
“See, I said, ‘Help the homeless,’ and some of these people are so stupid they boo,” Barkley remarked. However, rather than backing down, he decided to take action. On Inside the NBA, he revealed his plan to donate $250,000 to GLIDE, an organization dedicated to fighting homelessness and poverty.
“I spent the day in a homeless shelter… And not only that, I’m gonna donate $250,000 to GLIDE,” he announced. GLIDE, known for tackling social issues, focuses on aiding those in need. According to its website, the organization is dedicated to justice and change. This move raises an important question: Can one act of generosity erase years of criticism? Barkley insists he likes San Francisco, but his past words linger. Will this donation be a step toward reconciliation, or will it be dismissed as damage control? Only time will tell.
