Things have been challenging for Dak Prescott at the Cowboys. He has to adjust to new things almost every season. Be it Jerry Jones’s shenanigans, the coach’s system, or the fans’ anger. The 4th round pick (135th overall) of 2016 has been a core part of the team. He has given it his all. In 9 years, the signal caller has reached more than 30k+ passing yards. But it has brought in additional responsibility. And above all, there has been a blame game as well.
While the owner has placed the onus of the Super Bowl on the coaches and QB, Prescott once blamed the Cowboys’ front office for not bringing in fresher talent. Sometimes, the family gets involved as well. Tad Prescott has defended his younger brother on many occasions. As a result, fans believed there might be some underlying tensions between both sides. However, he cleared the air on the March 6 episode of the Unwanted Opinion podcast.
While talking about their bond, Tad said, “Y’all punch me in the face of saying know you knocking him, you saying bad things about the Jones’. I’ve never spoken bad about Jerry, Steven, Miss Charlotte, or any of them. So I don’t know where this comes at that we would do anything to be to knock down their brand or to try to hurt them in the long run.” That’s right!
Dak Prescott has been a part of the Cowboys for too long to blame them for anything. Instead, he has always helped Jerry Jones in any complicated situation. In 2024, the owner delayed WR CeeDee Lamb’s contract, so he didn’t attend any practice camp. But it was different for the signal caller.
Jerry Jones didn’t finalize the QB’s contract as well, but he kept practising with the team and never complained about it. This year, after Mike McCarthy left the job, he suggested Brian Schottenheimer’s name, who Jerry Jones promoted to the head coach position. Tad also pointed out that.
He argued that they have also worked hard enough to help the franchise build their team. The elder Prescott added, “Like no, we watch them get to where they are, we’ve helped them. We’ve been a part of that like, so why would they get to the highest point? Are we going to be the ones to try to tear them down?” No way.
The Jones’s also trust Prescott. Whenever they face any issue, they seek his advice, whether it’s a performance issue or any cap space problem. It happened this offseason as well.
Jerry Jones & Co. restructure Dak Prescott’s contract
A few days back, Stephen Jones, director of player personnel and Jones’s son, had already hinted at their way out of tight cap space. And a need to restructure the QB’s contract. In 2024, he signed a 4-year $240 million deal with $231 million guaranteed. But the basis for shuffling was that they had already done it in the past. So, the understanding on both sides was there.
According to Over the Cap, the Cowboys had $54.3 million cap space. They have restructured Prescott’s contract, creating $36.6 million in cap space. For that, they converted $45.75 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, reducing his cap hit from $89.89 million to $53.29 million. The franchise used the auto conversion clause in Dak Prescott’s deal that allows them to modify the deal when they want.
Now that they have altered the cap number of 2025, it increases his 2026 cap number by $9.15 million to $76.8 million. The result? They will do the same process next year. It has been a long story now. Just last year, a Cowboys source remarked that they have been paying the quarterback money from his previous contracts alongside the restructured ones. Not a problem!
For the world’s first $10 billion valuation franchise and most valued sports team for 9 years straight, money has not been an issue. It’s just that they need money to bring in fresh talent or sign some from the draft. Moreover, they also have to deal with LB Micah Parsons. There are a lot of questions. We will get answers in the next few days.
