Coming off a sensational rookie year, Xavier Worthy had it all. He was arguably the best receiver in the Chiefs offense last year. 59 receptions for 638 yards and 6 TDs (on the air). 20 rushes for 104 yards and 3 TDs (on the ground). Xavier showed dual-threat capabilities as a receiver which was a rare phenomenon. He was on his way to being the leader of the Chiefs receiver room in just his sophomore year. However, those dreams are now in shambles.
On Friday night, Worthy landed in jail after he got arrested in Williamson County. His arrest came about from suspicion of felony domestic violence, on a family or household member by impeding breath. Those are serious charges per state law. In Texas, this category of assault is considered a third-degree felony count punishable up to 10 years with a fine of $10,000. Even though, he was arrested, the D.A.’s office decided not to press charges. But there’s an update by Spotrac which doesn’t paint a bright future for the star.
His rookie contract, which consists of $6M in guarantees until 2027, could be null and void if the league suspends him. Now, Worthy’s future lies in the hands of the NFL. Actually, Worthy is not the first player to find himself tangled in a void contract situation. Last season, Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair’s $9M in guarantees from his $34M deal got automatically void because of suspension. The NFL decided to hand Al-Shaair a 3-game suspension because of a violent hit to the head of Trevor Lawrence that left him concussed.
WR Xavier Worthy’s Remaining #Chiefs Contract
2025: $1.4M (g’teed)
2026: $2M (g’teed)
2027: $2.6M (g’teed)
2028: Available Option
Any suspension handed down by the league for conduct would automatically void the guarantee on future salary.

At that time the Texans had the option to release him. But they didn’t, Houston decided to stick by their player and support him, saying, “he’s part of our plans.” Maybe something similar can happen to Worthy. Here’s actually some good news. Amid the talk of punishment, Worthy leaving KC and his contract being void of guarantees, there’s a huge update on Worthy’s case. Something that could probably alter the NFL’s stance on him.
Xavier Worthy’s case takes a massive turn
Moments after Worthy was arrested, his attorneys pleaded their client was innocent. They even added that the female who filed this case was asked to leave Worthy’s home multiple times, “upon discovery of her infidelity.” The statement also added further details about the alleged female, “The complainant further destroyed a room in the residence, scratched Mr. Worthy’s face and ripped out parts of his hair, which there is photographic evidence of.” But Worthy didn’t want to press charges from his end at the time of the arrest.
Then after a few hours, a massive update came from Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick’s office. His statement to Austin American-Statesman stated their office met and spoke with the witness and decided not to pursue the case. “After further investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and further discussion with a third-party witness, Mr. Worthy and his attorneys, this case is being declined at this time pending completion of the investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff’s office.” A sign of relief for Worthy. But not complete immunity.
As Dick’s statement further added, “We will continue to evaluate the case. As is our practice with all declines, should you develop additional information indicative of probable cause in this case, our office will consider that information and may present the case at that time to a Williamson County Grand Jury.” So, Dick’s office will continue to monitor this case closely until further information falls into their laps. As of now, there are no charges against Worthy and he is a free man. But it came at the cost of his image. No matter what happens down the line, Worthy will surely feel the effects of this incident. And his fans can only wish him a speedy return to the gridiron.
