David Benavidez Handed One Condition for Rematch by Caleb Plant

Is there a need for a rematch between ‘Interim’ WBC and WBA (Regular) light heavyweight champion David Benavidez and former IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant? ‘Sweethands’ Plant seems to think so, as he issued one condition to make that fight. ‘The Mexican Monster’ is coming off a hard-fought unanimous decision win over David Morrell.

The pair put on an absolute slugfest in Las Vegas on Saturday in their nail-biting bout. Later reports revealed that Saudi Boxing Chief Turki Alalshikh wants to have Benavidez ringside for the February 22nd rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. So, he can pit Benavidez against the winner of the fight.

Benavidez himself confirmed that he was on a collision course with the winner of the bout as became the winner’s mandatory. In the meantime, Plant is brewing plans of his own. Plant and Benavidez went toe-to-toe back in March 2023, which saw Benavidez dismantle Plant in a 12-round affair to get his hand raised via unanimous decision victory.

Since then, the Nashville native has bounced back, winning the WBA ‘Interim’ super middleweight title over Trevor McCumby. Regardless, Plant was at the venue when Benavidez defeated Morrell on Saturday. During an interview backstage with Fight Hype, Plant revealed the only condition under which a rematch between them can happen.

“I’m down to roll with anybody,” he told Fight Hype. “So, if David can make 168, we can run it back but I don’t know if he can.” It’s worth noting that after advocating for a fight against Canelo Alvarez for years, Benavidez decided to move on to the light heavyweight division. Now, he may end up fighting Bivol, who previously defeated Canelo.

Interestingly, Plant is not the only one vying for a rematch against ‘The Mexican Monster.’

Besides Caleb Plant, David Morrell also wants a rematch against David Benavidez

David Morrell is setting his sights on a rematch against David Benavidez after suffering his first career defeat to the undefeated fighter on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. Despite the setback, Morrell remains optimistic, saying, “It was a good fight. This is boxing, some days you win, and some days you lose. Tonight was my turn.”

“I’m young and I’ll keep pushing for another opportunity.” The judges scored the fight 118-108 and 115-111 twice in favor of Benavidez. Reflecting on the fight, Morrell stated, “We’ll watch this fight and learn from what I didn’t do well. We’ll practice more and train harder and earn another fight against Benavidez. I know I can beat him.”

That said, even though both Caleb Plant and David Morrell will look for redemption against David Benavidez, it appears the winner of Beterbiev and Bivol will have to fight Benavidez next. Unless the February 22nd fight ends with a need for a trilogy. Do you think Benavidez needs to fight Plant again?
