Is There a Cut at THE PLAYERS Championship 2025? Format of PGA Tour Signature Event Explained

No one had ever been able to defend THE PLAYERS Championship title until 2024! Scottie Scheffler did the unthinkable and became the first man to secure back-to-back wins (2023-24) at TPC Sawgrass. Knowing his competitive nature, Scheffler will be eager to create history again and make it 3 in a row at THE PLAYERS Championship 2025.

Unfortunately, his bad run of form leaves the doors wide open for others like Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Collin Morikawa to take the title this year. This list will not include Tiger Woods, as he has decided to skip the event weeks before the 2025 Masters Tournament. Nonetheless, it’s bound to be a grand event, and fans will be excited to watch it. Speaking of THE PLAYERS Championship 2025, how many players will be taking the field at TPC Sawgrass this week? Let’s take a closer look at the format of the tournament.

THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 field size & cuts

THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 will be played for the biggest purse in the PGA Tour’s calendar. Every top golfer will be fighting for the maximum from a $25 million pot. Apart from the $4.5 million payout, the winner will also get 750 FedEx Cup points for his efforts. But how many golfers will he need to overcome to pick up the grand prize?

There will be 144 players participating in the TPC Sawgrass event in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. This will include the winners from 2024 and 2025, the top ranked FedEx Cup players from both the years, and the highest ranked golfers on the OWGR table.

With a large field as such, there are bound to be cuts. And THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 won’t be any different. After 36 holes are played, the field will be cut to 65 players and ties. Unlike some Signature events, players who are within 10 strokes from the top of the leaderboard but outside the top 65 will miss the cut. That means only a limited number of top golfers will be able to make it to the weekend.

The format of THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 will ensure every player is at the top of their game at TPC Sawgrass. But who might come out on top and lift the title on March 16, 2025? Let’s find out.

Biggest hits and bigger misses

THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 might not feature a few big names. Along with Tiger Woods, Alex Noren, Thorbjorn Olesen, Matt Wallace, and Brendon Todd are also set to miss the event.
