Dwyane Wade, the 3x NBA champion and the only Heat player in franchise history to have a statue, gets starstruck! Yes, the moment happened last during the Met Gala red carpet, when he was alongside his wife Gabrielle Union, and the fanboy moment happened when Ed Sheeran was in close proximity. The British singer and songwriter’s presence was so captivating that Wade’s wife had to ask him if he was holding himself. 10 months after the event, The Flash details why the Shape of You singer has a special place in his heart.
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the host asked: “I actually heard the story, Please tell me it’s true because you were a little starstruck at the Met Gala?” Then he would proceed to play the video from the event where Dwyane Wade visibly can be seen having a fanboy moment. And the reason, “Listen, everybody is a little surprised, she said I played Ed before playoff games, and I did. The reason is because when artists say things that connects with you. ‘Thinking Out Loud’ is one of my favorite songs, came out in 2014, yes amazing song.”
The Heat legend explained that the 2014 song was his favorite. He did listen to it before games, as his wife stated in the video. “There was one line in there that connected with me. When the crowd don’t remember your name. As an athlete at some point, those cheers stop. Thank you guys, for those cheers, but those cheers stop.” Dwyane Wade said that one line resonated with him since he was having conflicting feelings about his career.
“I was going through a point in my life where I wasn’t the same as I once was. Just connected with the lyric when the crowd don’t remember your name.” That’s why D-Wade was all flustered during last year’s Met Gala. Thankfully, his wife was beside him to take the nerves away. ” First of all, he loves Ed Sheeran. Are you keeping it together right now?” asked Gabrielle Union. Let’s have a look at why in 2014, during his time with the Heat, the 3x NBA champion wasn’t feeling like himself.
Dwyane Wade and his potential troubles during the Big 3 era
The Miami franchise assembled the Big 3 back in the 2010-11 season. In their time together, they won two NBA Finals championships and four NBA Eastern Conference championships. Yes, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and D-Wade stayed together only for 4 seasons. The 13-14 season proved to be the final season of the trio, as King James went back to Cleveland. But the Flash’s issues were not just his best friend leaving him.

It all started before the 2012–13 season, when Dwyane Wade underwent left knee surgery- because of which he missed the 2012 Summer Olympics. The injury issues did not stop for the Heat icon, as he missed 28 games from injuries in the 2013–14 season. The team even decided to rest during “back-to-back” games. After LeBron left for Cleveland, it was the first season after Big 3. But even in the 2014–15 season, Wade missed seven consecutive games due to a hamstring injury.
In fact, he was selected for the All-Star games but pulled out due to hamstring issues. That season, Heat finished the season with a 37–45 record, as D-Wade missed the postseason for just the second time in his career. So, the constant feeling of not playing on the hardwood may have struck a chord with the Ed Sheeran song for the 3x NBA champion.
