“No, I want more take Downs. I want to go out there and keep dominating.” This is what Gable Steveson had to say after putting up one of the most dominant performances in the Finals of the Big Ten Wrestling championship. The Minnesota star didn’t just win, he made history by becoming the first ever in the history of heavyweights to win four Big Ten championships, and that was not even his best; at least that’s what he says.
The two-time NCAA champion took to Instagram on March 12th to share euphoric moments from the finals of the Big Ten Wrestling Championship. In a fantastic display of strength and passion, the Minnesota Gophers star reigned supreme over the Nittany Lions star, Greg Kerkvliet by 10-3. Steveson uploaded a picture with the belt around his waist, cherishing the victory because no matter how many times you might win, you never get used to it. “The first 4x Heavyweight Big Ten Champion..” but what’s more interesting is the second half of the caption, “My greatest performances still awaits.. <wink emoji>.” But when and where can we expect the wrestling superstar to take the mat by fire again? If you are pining for details, we got you!
Well, all the details for his next big performance were detailed by the Olympic Gold medalist on the same Instagram post. “See you in Philly!” read a part of the caption. Philadelphia is hosting the 2025 NCAA DI wrestling championships between March 20-22 at Wells Fargo Center, and as per Gable Steveson’s Instagram activity, the heavyweight wrestling star will be in attendance. But what is motivating him to show up on the mat again?
Although Gable Steveson took down the 2024 NCAA champion, Minnesota didn’t emerge victorious, Penn State did, scoring 181.5. Minnesota stars like Vance Vombaur and Mx McEnelly faced defeat in the hands of Brock Hardy and Carter Starocci, respectively. This was definitely not the end that Steveson expected for his team and he won’t just sit around and accept what is given to him.
Gable Steveson wants to give back to the Gophers
“Minnesota has given me everything, and now it’s my turn to give it right back to them,” these were the words the two times NCAA champion when he made his return to collegiate gymnastics so it’s only fair today that he must have felt a little gutted when the Big Ten Championship was once again won by the Nittany Lions. But the man who is unimpressed with his very own dominating performance is a tough nut to crack.
In the post-match press conference of the Big Ten championship, Gable was asked of how he was enjoying his comeback, to which the olympian told that he has always been a showman, he always wants to do big things for himself and that even beyond the mat and beyond his personal goals, he was responsible to leading his alma mater to ever greater glory. “I want to come here and lead this Gophers team to get a big ten title and get a national title.” Now the big ten title might be for the next season, but the national title is there, but it’s not going to be easy, and he knows it.
The 24-year-old further said, “it’s hard with Penn State in a way, it’s hard with Iowa in way but, man, we’re close.” Iowa with a record of 14-1 and 383 points stands at number two in the rankings, four times above Minnesota, who’s number six with a record of 10-2 and 320 points. Penn State is number one with an undefeated streak of 15-0 and 400 points, much to the advantage of the defending champions; the meet is in their home ground. With such an interesting mixture, it would be interesting to see what Gable can do; he might save his streak and he most probably even would, but can he alone get Minnesota an NCAA title?
