Mets Under Scrutiny For Counting Their Chickens Too Early After $765M Juan Soto Gimmick

What went behind the scenes of the famous Juan Soto deal with the Mets? The New York Mets recently announced that they would release a two-part documentary called “The Pursuit” on their 2024 season and the signing of the most sought-after free agent of 2024. It will premiere only on the Mets YouTube channel. The first part of the series will be released on March 14 and the second and last one on March 21.

It’s a smart move that the Mets have taken, capitalizing on the highest deal that the North American sports industry has ever seen. However, not everyone is happy about this. In fact, many commented on this, saying that the Mets may have taken this decision too fast. During the latest episode of Boomer and Gio on WFAN Sports Radio, broadcaster Gio was a bit skeptical about the New York Mets’ decision.

Gio said, “Let’s win a World Series and then we can have our docuseries on Juan Soto.” That’s true; Soto has yet to play in the season and show the world and the team that the $765 million was worth it. The Mets documentary may be seen as though the team thinks that they have already won something. While they may be the winners of the offseason by recruiting Juan Soto, the real championship awaits.

The real trophy lies at the end of the postseason, which will determine whether this investment was good or not. Even if the Mets do not win the World Series, Soto has to give his ultimate best. Gio also hopes the Mets’ new documentary on signing Soto doesn’t backfire; what if, after releasing such a documentary and hyping the Soto deal so much, the Dominican player underperforms?

What will the documentary feature besides the Juan Soto deal?

In this new documentary, viewers will see the journey of signing Soto through the eyes of Mets’ owners Steve and Alex Cohen, manager Carlos Mendoza, and President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. There will be interviews from Soto himself, Mets legends like Mike Piazza, David Wright, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling, as well as current stars like Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo.

Bobby Clemens, Vice President of Creative Content & Creative Director for the Mets, highlighted how ‘The Pursuit’ was crafted to provide fans with a deeper understanding of the strategic and emotional aspects behind the deal. “Ever since we signed Juan Soto, the sports world has been buzzing, and fans have been craving more insight,” Clemens said according to MLB.com. “This moment is truly special for the organization and for the sport.”

In partnership with CohnReznick, the documentary also delves into the complex business side of this monumental acquisition. Julie Murawski, Principal and Chief Marketing Officer at CohnReznick, noted that ‘The Pursuit’ is not just about sports but also offers invaluable lessons for executives across industries. “This film showcases the complexities of transformational deals and the strategic journey from valuation to value creation,” Murawski explained.
