“She’s tough, but she’s my rock,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said about his wife early this year. Talk about a blooming, healthy relationship that has become the epitome of love in NASCAR! After meeting in 2009, Dale Jr and Amy Earnhardt have weathered many challenges, from acclimatizing to each other to raising two adorable daughters. So, a little criticism from fans will not sway them at all.
Given their longstanding relationship – being together for 16 years – a lot of things have become commonplace for the two. Only a certain section of couples can relate to their eccentric couple habits. Yet both Dale Jr. and Amy have no problem with that reduced relatability.
Dale Jr. emphasizes pure, wholesome love
The 26-time Cup Series race winner hung up his firesuit back in 2017. Since then, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has admittedly grown more involved in the household. Watching his two daughters Isla and Nicole grow up and spending time with them is definitely part of it. Additionally, Dale Jr evolved in his already strong relationship with Amy Earnhardt. Staying together can lead to several quirky habits – and revealing them was the purpose of their new podcast, Bless Your ‘Hardt.’ From Dale’s unorthodox eating habits to fighting over car music, this couple divulges all.
Another habit that both Dale Jr. and Amy have is sitting on the same side of a restaurant booth. But a certain section of the fanbase admittedly found this unrelatable. On a recent episode of ‘Bless Your Hardt’, Amy Earnhardt rolled out the details: “We had a lot of feedback about that, but the way. I put that on my Instagram story and polled it. And I think 60-something percent said that it was an ‘ick.’ Apparently, Dale and I are weirdos for sitting next to each other. I don’t get it.” Then she boldly declared: “We accept our weirdo-ness, we’re not going to change it.”
Then, Dale Earnhardt Jr proceeded to explain the logic behind this. Harboring a long relationship is not easy – and such quirky or unreliable habits just make the bond stronger. He said: “So most of the people that are answering ‘ick’ and ‘nope’ won’t do that…are looking through the lens of someone who’s in a…a new fresh relationship. So on the front of that, yes, I would not sit on the same side as somebody that I just recently started seeing. Me and Amy are as in love as one couple could be. When you reach that point, I think it becomes like, ‘Let’s just sit together. I want to hold you, put my arm around you, I want your hand.’” Then, Amy cheekily added, “Or steal your food.” This was a sly dig at their first date when Dale Jr. completely ‘stole’ the show, and not in a good way!
Speaking on the podcast that led to the poll for their ‘weirdo-ness’ Amy said, “First date, we sat across from each other, [he] had hardly anything to say, but he ate half of my food and got up and was like, ‘Alright, it’s time to go, because I’m done.’ So I’d rather him sit next to me so I can hold his hand, at least have some intimacy.” From being a guy who at his date’s food on a first date to being the father to two beautiful kids with that same woman, Dale Jr. has come a long way.
Despite the extraordinary level of comfort that the couple now has, they once went through a talking stage. Moreover, they were red like berries, as they knew it was meant to be.
Love at first sight
Well, a healthy and romantic relationship always has a beautiful beginning. So do Dale Jr. and Amy, who met under a very unlikely circumstance – for work! Amy Reimann studied at the University of Kentucky and was a cheerleader on the Wildcat Danzers team. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in interior design – something that helped bring her closer to her beloved. In 2009, Dale Jr – an active NASCAR Cup Series driver then – hired her architecture firm to design his house in Kannapolis, Charlotte. And that story was how the two lovebirds met and knew it was meant to be. Amy recalled the incident for Kenny Wallace on a recent ‘Kenny Conversation’ episode.
While Amy Reimann was engrossed in her work, Dale Jr was visibly very shy. Even Amy admitted that she almost tripped in her speech. “Honestly, the first meeting, and I wasn’t looking. I don’t think he was looking. He hardly looked up from the plans that at one point, I’m talking about something, I don’t remember what it was, and he turned over and then we made eye contact and I was like, ‘Uh, what was that?’ I, like, almost got a little truly choked up. And so in the car, we drove all the way up here from Jacksonville, on the car ride home, my boss is, like ‘I think he kinda was a little smitten with you.’ And I looked at her, and I was like ‘What was that? I don’t know what that was, but he looked at me and I don’t even know what to make of that.’”
From calling Amy for a house renovation to starting a family together, Dale Jr. and Amy Earnhardt have been through it all. No wonder this magical encounter bloomed into such a wholesome bond in the present day. Here is to listening to more weirdo habits of the Earnhardts!
