Has Scottie Scheffler started losing his cool again? The world no. 1 hasn’t been in the best form ever since he returned from his injury. Fans were expecting Scheffler to start dominating from the get-go. However, he has been far from even competing for the top spot, let alone bullying his peers like he did last year. And with lack of success, Scheffler has gone back to his old ways, before he partnered up with Ted Scott as his caddie.
Scott had previously spoken about Scheffler’s temper tantrums in the Netflix Full Swing series. In fact, the veteran caddie had also asked the world no. 1 to get his anger issues under control before they start working together. Mr. Inevitable may have agreed to it back then, but it seems that his episodes of drama have returned in 2025. In fact, he was even criticized for the same when fans witnessed Scheffler throwing a tantrum at the WM Phoenix Open a few weeks ago.
And now, it seems that the 2024 Masters Tournament winner has got triggered again during an interview. Scheffler may not have thrown a temper tantrum, but a journalist believes that his response to an ordinary question was a bit too “snarky”.
Rex & Lav hosted another episode of their Golf Channel Podcast on YouTube. Rex was in an indoor setting, but it seems that Lav was at TPC Sawgrass covering the event. The on-field reporter gave a short review of Scheffler’s season so far, mentioning how he hasn’t had the best start to the season. But Lav was still surprised by some of the world no. 1’s responses to a few questions. He pointed out “the two questions that really got Scottie to be at his snarkiest, or his most sarcastic, or to use your (Rex’s) word, his grumpiest… One was about his putting and someone asking him, ‘what do you boil down those missed putts to?’”
The ‘snarky’ Olympic gold medalist replied “The hole is about this big (showing the size of the hole with his hand), and sometimes you’re putting from 10 feet, it can go here, other times it can go here. There is no real rhyme or reason to it.” The sarcastic response led to Lav assuming that Scheffler is “already in a little bit of a negative frame of mind.” That’s when Lav himself popped the question, “Are you surprised, at this point, with all the sunshine, that the golf course has not firmed up more?” He believed that his question was quite benign as he had only mentioned what he had observed on the course after one round of play.
Scottie Scheffler responded with “I mean, it sounded like we got a lot of rain. Sounds like you’re trying to write something about the golf course, so I’m not going to bite. But I appreciate the effort.” Shocked by the response, Rex confirmed if that’s how the conversation went before Lav confirmed the same. The Golf Channel reporter at TPC Sawgrass shrugged off Scheffler’s response and moved on.

But here’s the kicker. Rory McIlroy also joined the press conference immediately after the 13x PGAT winner left. Lax shared the stark difference in his response as compared to Scheffler’s.
Rory McIlroy gets asked the same question as Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler may have found that question risqué, but Rory McIlroy had a much straightforward response to it. When the world no. 2 was inquired about the same issue by Lav, he simply responded with “I would have expected the greens to be a little bit firmer today than they were.” This is the kind of answer Lav was expecting to get from Scheffler as well.
The Golf Channel reporter stated that such questions are important because they “relate to course strategy.” He explained that responses to these questions help him understand the mentality of the golfer. It gives a glimpse at what the golfer is planning to do as the course gets even more challenging over the next few days. Lav mentioned that he spoke to the local meteorologist, Steve Borkowski. According to the expert, there will be “30 miles an hour gust over the weekend, some storms on Sunday as well.” He was only inquiring how Scheffler is going to adapt to the conditions, hence was taken aback by the “sarcastic response.”
