The SEC women’s basketball awards have been announced, and LSU fans and players are not happy about it! None of the LSU players made it to the list of winners, whether it was Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, or Sixth Woman of the Year. Flau’jae Johnson, Aneesah Morrow, and Mikaylah Williams earned All-SEC First Team honors, and Morrow made the All-Defensive Team, per the March 4, 2025, announcement on SECsports.com. However, none won individual awards like Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, or Freshman of the Year, sparking outrage. Flau’jae Johnson wasn’t pleased and made her feelings known.
The LSU guard, who missed the SEC tournament due to a shin injury, spoke about the SEC awards on her YouTube channel, Best of Both Worlds with Flau’jae. While she was proud that she, Aneesah Morrow, and Mikaylah Williams made it to the All-SEC First Team, she expressed her frustration about not getting enough recognition.
In her channel, she said, “Do I feel like my teammates are getting the respect they deserve nationally? We ain’t getting the respect we deserve conference-ly. I don’t think that’s a word but you get what I’m saying. The SEC Player of the Year is obviously insanity, and I wasn’t on any defensive teams. I feel like I play pretty good defense.”
Texas’ Madison Booker was named Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, announced March 4, 2025, on SECsports.com. The Texas forward averaged 16.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, while shooting 46% from the field, helping the Longhorns win the regular season championship. So why did Flau’jae think this was “insanity”? Well, for starters, she herself averaged 18.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, shooting 47.3%, per LSU stats—not 19 points and shooting 46%.But an even stronger case could be made for her teammate Aneesah Morrow. The senior forward averaged 18.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, shooting 49.5% from the field. Morrow was also the only LSU player on the All-Defensive team. Yet, Kentucky’s Clara Strack won Defensive Player of the Year, leaving LSU without individual honors despite their dominance.
But this season, LSU haven’t been able to get a single win over Texas. Even in the SEC tournament, the Longhorns came away with a victory. But Flau’jae was still proud of her team. Let’s take a look at what she had to say about her Lady Tigers following their heartbreaking exit in the semifinals of the tournament.
Flau’jae Johnson “proud” of her team following the Texas loss
It was a Madison Booker show as Texas beat the LSU Tigers 56-49. Booker finished with 25 points, proving why she deserved to win the Player of the Year award. But LSU, already without Flau’jae, lost Morrow in the second half as well, making it even more difficult to secure a win.
To add to that, Kim Mulkey, who has been grieving through a personal loss, let associate head coach Bob Starkey run the team while she sat on the bench to rally some information here and there. Naturally, Flau’jae Johnson couldn’t be more proud of her team who have been through so many issues the past few weeks.
In the same video, she said, “I was excited — I was proud of my team playing Texas because I’m like, bro, y’all held them. You didn’t have me. You didn’t have Aneesah, which is a lot of scoring. Mikaylah was in foul trouble … so I was really happy that the bench players stepped up. You can’t win a championship without bench play, and so I hope they understand how important they are to us and what all we do.”
With the bench restricting the best team in the conference to just 56 points, the Lady Tigers can head into the Big Dance knowing that, with a fully fit squad, they’ll have a real shot at the championship again! It remains to be seen if Flau’jae and Morrow will make a full recovery before March Madness begins, but expectations are high that they will. The Tigers will definitely be a team to watch when the tournament kicks off on the 18th of March. Stay tuned for more updates!
