This is evident in what ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Sunday, March 16. He noted: “‘I’m told from sources that Rodgers does have standing offers from the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. Teams are waiting this out, waiting on Rodgers.” So, on one hand, as per new updates, the Giants are still waiting on the QB; on the other hand, Mike Tomlin’s team might have made a plan.
According to Blitzburgh on X, “Pelissero believes the Steelers have bought themselves some time to wait on Aaron Rodgers with the Mason Rudolph signing.” The post further noted, “The Steelers, by virtue of signing Mason Rudolph, bought themselves some time here because now worst-case, if this doesn’t work out with Rodgers, you could roll with Mason Rudolph who, let’s be honest, over the last several years with all the quarterback changes since Ben Roethlisberger retired, probably the best stretch of football they’ve played as an offense was down the stretch in 2023 when Mason Rudolph took over.”

Mike Tomlin’s Steelers re-signed Rudolph after selecting him in a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft for six seasons. During that tenure, he started 13 of 21 games. And the stats? Well, the QB completed 291 of 458 passes with 63.5 percent for 3,085 yards and 19 touchdowns. And now, this time, after Russell Wilson and Justin Field’s decision failure, they signed him on a two-year contract. So, as per Pelissero, signing Rudolph, that too for two-years, is the major reason why the Steelers aren’t in a rush now to make any decision on Aaron Rodgers.
So, Mike Tomlin and his team are on the safe side! If the deal doesn’t happen with the ex-Jets QB and 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, Rudolph still remains their solid backup plan. So, it’s even possible that they might not sign Rodgers, which eventually could lead him to retirement possibilities.
The entire decision is in the hands of Vikings’s head coach, Kevin O’Connell. Ownership lets the football staff run things, and O’Connell has a strong track record with quarterbacks. But will he go with Rodgers, the proven veteran, or J.J. McCarthy, the young, untested QB?
