“Fair or unfair, at Connecticut, it’s not good enough just to win. There’s a perception that if we don’t go to the Final Four, it’s a bad season.” The belief is that anything less than a Final Four appearance constitutes a disappointing season for UConn, according to Geno Auriemma, their highly decorated coach entering his 40th year. He’s taken the Huskies to new heights in these four decades, winning 11 national championships and 23 final four appearances.
Now, with 2024-25 approaching its end, looking at their current form, another NCAA tournament is on the horizon. While everyone is aware of Geno’s on-court personality, not much is known about his personal life. Although deeply rooted in his culture, the 70-year-old avoids blending in or blurring lines with the team or players, believing it inappropriate to discuss religious matters with them. Let’s take a look at the coach’s family background.
What is Geno Auriemma’s ethnicity?
Born on March 23, 1954, Geno grew up in Montella, Italy, making him an Italian-born American basketball coach. Geno immigrated to the USA at the age of seven and stayed in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and in 1994, the coach became a citizen of the U.S. He is of Italian ethnic descent.
Auriemma attributes the success of Italian-Americans in coaching to their cultural disposition, “I think it is because Italians like to be around people and are in tune to what others are feeling.”
Forty years ago, Geno Auriemma agreed to be the University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach at a @dunkindonuts in Willimantic.

What is Geno Auriemma’s nationality? Where was he born?
An American basketball coach and former player, Geno’s parents Donato and Marsiella Auriemma played a pivotal role in shaping him into the person he is today. His dad worked as a factory worker, and he passed away in 1997 during the Big East Tournament. On the other hand, Geno’s mother was an integral part of their transition to the United States, as she worked in a candy factory and later in a factory that produced throwing rugs. Marsiella passed away three years ago on December 8, 2022, at the age of 91.
Geno gave credit to his mother for the intelligence behind his coaching “Isn’t every mom a coach in some ways? Doesn’t every mom have a team at home that they have to try to guide through different phases of their lives?” he said. “I think I watched, and I paid attention and I listened. I saw how she treated people and how she was on a daily basis. The impact that she had on other people.” Geno has siblings as well, with him being the eldest button in the family. He grew up in Montella along with a brother named Ferruccio and a sister named Anna.
What religion does Geno Auriemma follow?
Geno follows the Catholic religion as suggested by the Catholic World Report, and the coach doesn’t bring religion onto the basketball court. “I just use religion by being who I am. The players know I’m a God-fearing man, but at the end of the day we do work for a state school and you can’t be preaching that.” said Geno.
