LPGA Legend Under Fire as Fans Condemn ‘Chickensh*t Move’ Over Questionable On-Course Incident

Laura Davies is a golfing icon. She has been celebrated across the LPGA Tour and the Ladies European Tour and has won the most number of events on the LET, 45 events. The 20-time LPGA winner has also won four majors during her stellar career and has enjoyed success in her senior career as well, winning two major championships on the Legends Tour. But this isn’t it!

Davies is a respected figure in the golfing world and outside and won the title of Dame in 2014 for her achievements and services to women’s golf. However, the British golfer recently found herself inviting the ire of golfing fans around the world after a video of hers was posted on social media. The video saw her use an unconventional process, i.e., the turf tee, to play a drive. Yes, you heard it right!

In the video posted by the USGA on X, Laura Davies uses a club to disturb the green and create a thick mound. After repetitive powerful strikes, the mound is formed, and she puts the ball on top of the mound. She then proceeds to drive the ball using the mound as a tee. Despite her age, the 61-year-old’s drive was exemplary. Perfect contact and the ball soars away. The video was captioned, “You’ll want to watch this more than once.”

While the video was a look into a different way to do things, not all fans were on board with the process. Especially the fact that Davies had proceeded to alter the surface of the tee box, and caused a dent in the beauty of the green carpet. Many fans took to X to voice their displeasure.

Fans criticize Laura Davies for natural tee shot

One golfing fan was very short and direct in his analysis of the video. He stated that the whole video was a “Chickensh*t move”, while another fan lamented that the golfer for the purpose of the video had, “Ruined a perfectly good tee box.”

Fans were also quick to showcase their true emotions, explaining that the methods of days gone by are not really worth the effort or the time it takes. In the video, Davies is seen putting a lot of effort into getting the mound of grass up and at the right height, something that could be solved very fast with a proper modern tee. “I respect the old school golf but this makes me cringe a little watching it. Hahaha.”

One fan took the funny route, and poked fun at Davies’s age, stating, “I am pretty sure, she grew up before the golf tee was invented.” The tee was invented in 1899 by Dr. George Grant and has been a revolutionary piece of equipment on the course. Davies is old but not that old.

Another netizen also took a jibe at Davies and her age, stating that the greenkeeper might be on the lookout for revenge for destroying the smooth surface on the course. “Better hope the green keeper doesn’t also work at the nursing home,” the fan quipped.

Fans were not too kind to the decorated golfer for altering the surface for her shot, an old-school method. What do you think of the Laura Davies video? Do you think the criticism is justified? Or do you think surface alterations are part and parcel of the game of golf?
