Heading into a new season, Nebraska HC Matt Rhule has a lot of questions to answer, including one surrounding his QB1, Dylan Raiola. Some of it comes down to weight concerns surrounding Raiola. Then, there is that constant yearning to revamp the receiver room to give his QB effective weapons. That has made recruiting a top priority for the Huskers. Rhule follows the rule to the core and has taken a step back from the upcoming Spring game to protect his roster from potential poaching. However, his latest coaching room addition stands pivotal among all his recruitment efforts. The move in question is none other than Jamar Mozee, the new senior football assistant to Rhule’s insanely talented squad.
In July 2024, the former Lee’s Summit North High School head coach officially revealed his new endeavor as the NU senior football assistant. Mozee said it was Matt Rhule’s iconic dedication, work ethic, and ability to handle talents with care and efficiency that made him lean on the program initially. He feels proud to get familiar with a historic program like Nebraska. Well, the pride would be vice versa, nevertheless. The addition of the former Florida analyst can be a game-changer for the Huskers in their projected breakout season in 2025.
No, it’s not just about Mozee’s wise knowledge and perspective of the game that will help the players get an edge over the opponents. There’s also the potential for him to go on the road to recruit, as a school can designate 10 on-field coaches for the process. Breaking down an overlooked potential, analyst Wilson Ditman noted, ”Jamar Mozee, he’s building up that recruiting pipeline. So. for that reason, we’re going to get guys like Evan Walker, a four-star running back coming out of Ray Moore. Which is a suburb of Kansas City. We might get guys coming out of St Louis like Titan Davis, Keenan Harris, Jordan Taylor. Just a couple because of a guy like Jamar Mozee. He’s revolutionizing the recruiting game, particularly in this state. These are just because of his expertise and that’s something that Nebraska’s tried to do for so long.”
Even outside of the Kansas State, his known haven for a while, Mozee made a stop at Kingwood High to weigh in on recent 2027 targets—linebacker Cade Haug and offensive lineman Kennedy Brown. He also checked on key 2026 secondary target Isaiah Williams at his school, Fort Bend Marshall. Mozee is spreading his wings in the Nebraska recruitment. But nothing matches him flipping his four-star son from Oregon’s locker room.
It was obvious but huge in its own right. Dittman continued his praise train for the new Huskers’ mentor. “He brought in four Bona fide starters in Williams Nwaneri, Jamir Khan, Dama Maka. I don’t think Isaiah Mozee is a starter, but he’s going to be a starter long-term for us. He’s brought in because of Jamar Mozee, his father. So, that’s the first thing he’s doing, and why I think he’s such an unsung hero.”
Matt Rhule has already grabbed commitments from 20 players, with 12 being four-star recruits and the rest three-star prospects. Mozee, the secret ace in the hole, is making the game smoother and, most importantly, creating an early alternative for the upcoming roster cut.
Matt Rhule has to fight off the potential mass exodus with his new recruitment edge
In the wake of the huge NIL influence, Matt Rhule can’t escape the inevitable consequences. Result? A lot of players depart as they find better deals elsewhere. But this is certainly not the end. Heading into the Spring portal season, Nebraska will face some more losses. A few of them have been a pivotal figure in the past season’s success.
Dittman dished the mass exodus alert mentioning some specific names. “So, I want to get things started with the guys going into spring ball who, if they don’t step up, I would not be shocked if they transfer. Kwinten Ives, Janiran Bonner, Demetrius Bell. Demetrius Bell’s out, but I could see him transfer if he’s saying, ‘Hey, I’m not a top-five receiver on the depth chart, might go play somewhere else.’” Some of the movement would be because of the new 105 roster limit rule.
But Dittman has more to his list. “Tyler Knaak, Gage Stenger, and Malcolm Hartzog. Those are the veteran guys who I could see transferring just because they don’t have much eligibility left. If they’re buried in the depth chart, they might go.” Players like Tyler and Gage didn’t get to see the field much. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they immediately chose to leave for a better chance.
