Injuries? Yeah, the Yankees have had their fair share—Gerrit Cole, Giancarlo Stanton, and the list keeps growing. But does that mean the Bronx Bombers are down for the count? Not a chance. Yankees GM Brian Cashman insists that while the roster may see some shake-ups, their championship ambitions remain the same. So, what’s the game plan? New signings? Tactical shifts? A whole new look?
“A work in progress.” A brief yet far-fetched response came from the Yankees GM Brian Cashman to the New York Post. What does that mean? “The roster changes all the time, so it’s certainly a different roster this year than how it ended last year. So we’re learning a lot about the new guys. We’ve had some injuries to some of the previous guys left over. I think we have a talented team. Some of them will be left behind as they rehab, but there have been some guys who have stepped up and given us some comfort at the same time.”
The team is certainly working towards finding better replacements. Ben Rice is replacing Giancarlo Stanton, as per reports. Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren are also getting added to the roster. So yes, a few new guys are going to wear pinstripes this season. Carrasco got included in the Yankees’ opening-day rotation, thanks to his 1.69 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in the spring. But since 2023, the 38-year-old has maintained a 6.18 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in the regular season. A concern for the team?
On the other hand, Warren pitched 19.1 innings, struck out 19 batters, and recorded a 4.19 ERA in six games in the spring. Impressive enough, but his 10.32 ERA in 6 games from last year was haunting enough for the team. However, a big stage is all that can make them shine during clutch moments. All these names will make it to the new-look Yankees this year. A more lean and mean team.
The new-look Yankees are all about youths
Indeed, the Yankees are putting a lot of effort into nurturing and incorporating young players into their roster; a number of these guys are showing promise as future stars and important contributors. The most promising name coming up this year is Oswaldo Cabrera, a versatile infielder who has shown promise, particularly defensively, and could be a strong candidate for the starting job at 3B. Coming up with 36 RBIs and 8 HRs, he can be a potent replacement for the veteran DJ LeMahieu, down with an injury.
On the second base, it’s again the rookie Jazz Chisholm taking the lead. Known for his hard-hitting, scoring 73 RBIs and 24 HRs last year, he will add strength to the veteran Paul Goldschmidt at 1B. Now that Warren and Carrasco have also been added to the starting rotation, the pitching squad is getting younger. Yes, the Yankees got Aaron Judge as the face at the infield, but the team’s contention will all depend on the young blood. The Yankees, once known for their star-heavy lineup, will be known for their athleticism this year.
The Yankees are always in contention for a solid postseason run. A ring this year might just make this younger team formidable going forward.
