August of last year was a dark one for hockey fans. Two bright stars of the hockey world, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, passed away in an unfortunate accident. The two were riding bicycles when a car collided with them, which proved to be fatal. Despite the two leaving a void in the hockey world, their legacy is still celebrated today as their widows launched a foundation to honor their late husbands. Named the Gaudreau Foundation, it aims to create a positive impact on society through various programs. Several bodies have come forward to support this noble cause, and the foundation added yet another partner recently.
Last week, the Augusta Masters announced a collaboration with the Gaudreau Foundation before the start of the tournament. The Masters Golf Pool was introduced, with entries priced at $25 apiece. The program announced that 10% of the total pot would be donated to the Gaudreau Foundation, as the latter received massive support from one of the sport’s biggest tournaments.
Days later, Meredith Gaudreau, widow of Johnny Gaudreau, announced another collaboration of the foundation with the renowned brand, BLK The Label. The latter’s aim is to turn products into purpose, with each sale supporting the cause of the Gaudreau Foundation. Earlier, Meredith hinted that something big was coming up between the Gaudreau Foundation and BLK The Label, and this collaboration was exactly the motto behind the reveal.
With this collaboration, the aim of the foundation “to continue giving back to what the boys are passionate about and to ultimately continue to make a positive impact on the world in their honor,” would be served more efficiently, and would bring a positive impact on society.
Meanwhile, the NHL world has truly united to honor the legacy of the Gaudreau brothers. Last month, the New Jersey Devils paid a wonderful tribute to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.
New Jersey Devils’ wonderful move for Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau
Although the two brothers, Johnny and Matthew, never played for the Devils, the team was among the first ones to honor their legacy with a wonderful move. In a heartwarming tribute, they launched a prestigious honor, the “Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau Most Valuable Player Award.” This award would recognize college hockey players and would be given to the stars of the next generation.
Announcing this award, the franchise said, “As part of today’s NJSIAA High School Championships, one player from each state final matchup will receive the newly-created Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau Most Valuable Player Award, 2025.”
Earlier, even the United States national team honored the two brothers by dedicating their wins to them. The Blue Jackets, in one of their games, entered in a uniform ensemble look complete with boots and sweatshirts that Johnny Gaudreau would have casually rocked in. This denotes how the two brothers are fondly remembered and their legacy celebrated after a tragic end to their careers. Nonetheless, their widows and the hockey community together are ensuring that the two brothers are remembered forever for their contributions to the NHL world.
