Now, what better honor is there than to have your favorite head coach as your biggest supporter? All kudos to Auburn Tigers HC Hugh Freeze for sprinkling positivity in his squad. This kind of positive attitude comes from Freeze, who himself is fighting a health battle. It turns out his players give him the motivation to push forward. The Tigers had their A-Day spring practice on Saturday, April 12, at the Jordan Hare Stadium. Right now, the hottest plot in Auburn is the quarterback dilemma. The Deuce Knight vs. Jackson Arnold debate. Already, Arnold has caught enough side eyes that close the doors to his QB1 aspirations with the world leaning more toward Knight. But Freeze taps into damage control, praise- bombing his favorite quarterback out of the two. Is this the beginning as the head coach sends an alert to 15 SEC Teams?
“If I say there legitimately could be like a legit quarterback competition in spring and in fall like obviously Jackson Arnold’s the favorite but there is a world where Deuce Knight just looks fantastic and gets into the conversation,” said analyst Lindsay Crosby. Now, why blame others when you himself has walked the same path? During the A-Day practice, Arnold was sidelined while nursing a minor injury. That’s when $950K Knight pounced into action and left Freeze way too impressed. “I thought he made some really nice throws putting the ball. We talk about all the time, trust our receivers, and put the ball in the position for them to make a play. There was some three or four in that skelly period that were just really nice throws.” It’s obvious that this would pump the confidence of the Arnold haters who already have thrown him at the edge.

That’s when Freeze thought of taking things under his control and lessening the blow. Already, Arnold has been compared with quarterbacks like Garrett Nussmeier and Arch Manning. The Texas Longhorns quarterback comes up with 939 yards, a 67.8% completion rate, 9 touchdowns, and only 2 interceptions. That, too, playing a handful of games. And Nussmeier ranked second in the SEC in passing yards in 2024. Arnold, on the other hand, played in 17 games and completed 62.9% of his passes for 1,984 yards, with 16 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. In that case, even with experience, Arnold’s numbers don’t quite stack up. On April 14, SEC Network posted a clip from Freeze’s appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show. The head coach said, “Really excited about Jackson. He and Deuce [Knight] we only had those two guys here, at all the reps, I think it was a good thing.”
He then sounded all confident while saying, “And Jackson obviously has all the tools to be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.” Already, the Tigers fans are way too sensitive about the quarterback position. After all, they might not have forgotten how Payton Thorne threw a pick-six late in the fourth quarter that gave the Oklahoma Sooners the lead. So, Arnold’s biggest task will be to bring consistency. Freeze thinks that the quarterback ticks off all the boxes. “He’s got the arms talent, he’s got the legs, he’s got the football IQ, and I think he just needs confidence.” Does that mean the Auburn head coach has found his weapon from whom the SEC Elites might keep a safe distance?
A fire of redemption burns bright in Hugh Freeze
Already, the pressure is 100x on Freeze. That’s because he is the first Auburn head coach in half a century to get a third year on the job after two losing seasons. It might be a bitter pill for him to swallow to accept the fact that the Tigers’ talent on the field has hit rock bottom. And who has been blamed the most? Ofcourse, Freeze. The head coach made a few bad calls last season. For instance, the Razorbacks’ Ja’Quinden Jackson was given a touchdown when he clearly didn’t break the plane of the goal line late in the game.
This made SEC Mike throw Freeze under his critical lens. “How big of a question mark is Hugh Freeze because again taking over play calling you know that that was supposed to save everything I thought they looked you know even worse at at times.” But he is trying to mend the loopholes little by little. His biggest glow-up came on the recruiting front. Freeze has two full recruiting cycles under his belt, ranking 8th in 2025 and 10th in 2024. However, having years of experience, he had to raise the bar high for himself.
After all, he knew, without tangible results this season, he might be easily replaced in the fourth season. Now, does the pressure take the better of Hugh Freeze? Absolutely not. This pressure gives birth to a hunger in him, and he is all set to prove to his 15 SEC contenders that they had taken him lightly. “But I do feel optimistic with the two we’ve had, we can compete… should compete this year. So it does look different. So let’s go line up and see what we’ve got.” Can Hugh Freeze ignite the Tigers’ roar in 2025?
