Who Is Don Hasselbeck’s Wife, Mary? All About Ex-NFL TE’s Family, Children and More

“He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor, and storyteller.” These heartfelt words were shared by Don Hasselbeck’s son, Matt, just hours after the NFL world learned of the tight end legend’s passing on Monday, April 14. “Despite being an All-American at Colorado and a Super Bowl Champion with the Raiders, what we are most proud of is the leader he was for our family,” Matt wrote in an emotional tribute on X.

Don Hasselbeck, one of the most respected tight ends of his era, died of cardiac arrest, leaving behind a legacy that stretches far beyond football. From being selected 52nd overall in the 2nd round of the 1977 NFL Draft to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XVIII, he built a career defined by toughness, dedication, and heart. But through every high and low, both on and off the gridiron, there was one person who remained his constant—his wife, Mary.

Who is Don Hasselbeck’s wife, Mary?

Before Don Hasselbeck made it to the NFL, he met Mary Beth “Betsy” (Rueve) Hasselbeck. Their love story began long before the stadium lights and roaring crowds. After getting to know each other, they tied the knot on March 26, 1975—two years before Don would officially enter the NFL.

Through every chapter of Don’s career, Mary stood by his side. From the early rookie days to the triumphant Super Bowl run with the Raiders, and through the later years as he transitioned through free agency, Mary was the unwavering support behind the scenes. The couple had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary—a golden milestone—before Mary heartbreakingly lost her partner on April 14, 2024.

Today, she remains surrounded by the love of her three sons, each of whom followed in their father’s football footsteps.

Who are Don Hasselbeck’s children?

Don and Mary Hasselbeck raised three sons, all of whom inherited their father’s passion for football.

Matt Hasselbeck, the eldest, is best known for his long NFL career as a starting quarterback, most notably with the Seattle Seahawks. A three-time Pro Bowler, Matt credits much of his foundation to the lessons learned from Don. In his tribute post, Matt said, “He helped set our feet on solid ground.” He added, “There is a 6’7” hole in our hearts. He will be so missed by so many. We are beyond grateful that he was our dad and look forward to Heaven and being all together again.”

Tim Hasselbeck, the second son, also played quarterback in the NFL. The 47-year-old served as a backup for several teams during his eight-year career. Today, he’s a familiar face to football fans as a fantasy football analyst on ESPN, continuing the family’s deep connection to the sport.

The youngest son, Nathanael Nicolas Hasselbeck, may not have made it to the NFL, but he carved out his own path in college football. He played defensive back at Boston College and later at the University of Massachusetts. After Don’s passing, Nathanael too shared a heartfelt message online, underscoring just how deep a loss it was for the family.

Don Hasselbeck’s passing has left a profound void in the lives of Mary and her sons, but his influence endures—in their memories, in their values, and in the legacy he leaves behind. A champion on the field and a pillar off it, Don’s story is not only about stats and rings, but also about love, loyalty, and family.

May the NFL great rest in peace.
