The transfer portal’s spring window hasn’t even opened, and already dominoes are tipping. April 16 through 25 will be a whirlwind, but for Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes, the storm might actually bring sunshine. The offseason Carson Beck remains injured, and confidence is growing in Coral Gables that Cristobal already has a contingency QB in motion. It’s not the first time the Canes have pivoted fast at QB. The Hurricanes are hunting for insurance behind Beck.
All eyes have already been glued to Miami’s backup QBs—Emory Williams, Judd Anderson, and Luke Nickel. But what if you throw a 2,376-yard passer with potential into the mix, even if he’s not super familiar with Cristobal’s playbook? And guess who Cristobal seems to be leaning towards? It’s a name the Canes know pretty well.
Jake Garcia, the former Miami signal caller turned college football journeyman, has officially ghosted East Carolina. According to reports, Garcia skipped practice on Tuesday and informed the team he intends to enter the transfer portal. That announcement hit just a few days ahead of the official window, and it didn’t come out of nowhere. Garcia’s time with the Pirates had been lukewarm, and his sudden absence leaves ECU with questions and the Hurricanes with a familiar solution. For a quarterback that’s bounced around more than a March Madness sleeper, this latest move might be less about instability—and more about a full-circle return.
Garcia’s name still rings in Coral Gables. He was once the crown jewel of Miami’s 2021 recruiting class, a four-star out of Georgia’s Grayson High who could sling it with velocity and poise. In his first taste of action as a true freshman, Jake Garcia went 11-of-14 for 147 yards, threw two touchdowns, and added 45 yards on the ground. For a brief moment, the hype felt real. That same year, the Hurricanes were navigating turbulence at QB, and Garcia looked like the steady hand. But injuries and a crowded depth chart held him back. By 2022, he appeared in eight games, went 68-of-115 for 803 yards, five touchdowns, and four picks—solid but not enough to lock down the gig. So Garcia went portal diving again, landing at Mizzou.

The Mizzou stint didn’t stick either. He did not see the field that year. Garcia barely made noise before heading to East Carolina in January of 2024 and unfortunately struggled as a Pirate. Garcia appeared in six games, completing 60.2% of his passes for 1,426 yards with eight touchdowns to 12 interceptions. But once again, the carousel kept spinning.
Now, his next landing spot may end up being a homecoming. As per Stephen Igoe’s report, “Garcia has made stops at Miami and Missouri.”
Garcia’s Miami roots run deep, and the idea of backing up Carson Beck, possibly even competing for the job outright, makes more sense than it appears at first glance. With Beck likely to command the QB1 role, Mario Cristobal knows better than to leave that room thin. Garcia provides a veteran presence, familiarity with the system, and low-risk upside. He’s not a flashy fix, but he’s a foundational piece for a roster with ACC contention on its mind.
Three teams in three years is the kind of résumé that invites criticism. But not every transfer is about running from a challenge. Sometimes it’s about getting in where you fit in. With spring practice still rolling, the timing couldn’t be better. The Hurricanes need another arm, and Jake’s already been in the building before. He doesn’t need a map. The move could prove quietly crucial.
Beck-ing up to speed, Carson Beck cleared for full go this summer
Carson Beck is about to be unleashed. After being mostly sidelined during spring practices while rehabbing from a UCL elbow injury he suffered in the 2024 SEC Championship Game, the Georgia transfer is finally set to take the reins in Coral Gables. According to HC Mario Cristobal, Beck has been given the green light to return to full football activities starting Monday. That’s big news as the Hurricanes pivot from spring ball to summer grind mode.
“The good part is, as our PLP—our player-led practices—come up, he’s going to be fully cleared for all of those,” Cristobal said after wrapping up spring practice. “So he’ll have the opportunity to have about 16 of those before we even head into Fall camp. Not to mention going on his own with the players. So there’s a lot of opportunity coming up.”
Cristobal added, “He certainly took advantage of whatever he could mentally, the physical part begins on Monday. So we’re excited for that.” Wearing a new No. 11 jersey, Beck has been limited to some light throwing and running drills—but now, it’s game on. QB2 spot remains well up for grabs, leaving us to see if Coach Cristobal will go for a star man or trust their current backups.
