The Kansas City Chiefs came so close to making history last season. Three Super Bowls in a row is definitely not a joke. But falling short of the three-peat, ah, that one really hurts. Nevertheless, now it’s time to get back to business. With the 2025 draft ahead, Andy Reid has a lot of work to do. For instance, we all know that trading away Joe Thuney left a big gap in the offensive line – something which Patrick Mahomes can’t afford. In addition, they also lost some key players on the defensive front in free agency.
So, there is a need to add some weapons to the roster. Andy Reid’s Chiefs have eight total picks, and they will be kicking off their 2025 draft with the 31st overall pick. So, let’s discover who those lucky players can be:
Round 1, Pick 31: Josh Conerly Jr., OT, Oregon
The Chiefs are on the clock, and the trenches need help badly. After watching Patrick Mahomes take 47 sacks last season, something’s gotta give. So now it comes down to this: do they shore up the defensive line, or finally lock in a real contender at left tackle? Conerly Jr. could be that man.
Conerly Jr. is 6’5″, 311 pounds, and made 28 starts at left tackle in college. He is known for his smooth, calm, and reliable skills – nothing flashy, just solid football. And if he steps in and holds that blindside, Mahomes can finally breathe a little easier. This pick could be a game-changer, not just for the offense, but for the future of Andy Reid’s team.
Round 2, Pick 63: Tre Harris, WR, Ole Miss
Tre Harris is a powerhouse, plain and simple. Over the past two seasons, he’s been one of the most efficient wideouts in college football. He’s got the size, the speed, and that extra gear after the catch. He’s not just a typical X receiver; he can slide into the slot and still make plays. His specialty is that this athlete fights for the ball, doesn’t back down, and even blocks when needed. Sure, Ole Miss didn’t ask him to run the most complex routes, but that doesn’t mean he can’t.
Now look at the Chiefs’ current room – Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Travis Kelce. That’s a loaded crew, but let’s be honest, there’s some risk there with injuries, age, and off-field stuff. So, that’s why Harris makes so much sense. He gives Patrick Mahomes’ team the depth, speed, and a whole lot of upside. He’s not just a backup plan; he’s part of the future in the making.
Round 3, Pick 66: Princely Umanmielen, DE, Ole Miss
The Chiefs took a shot on Felix Anudike-Uzomah in 2023, hoping he’d bring some fire to the pass rush. But let’s be real, he hasn’t made the splash they needed. Now, with the 2025 draft approaching, all eyes are on Princely Umanmielen. This kid transferred to Ole Miss and lit the SEC on fire, with 9.5 sacks, and 17.2% applied pressure on his pass rush attempts. No doubt, he’s fast, explosive, and flat-out dangerous off the edge. Hence, tackles struggle to stay in front of him.
In addition, the player knows how to bend, slip around the corner, and close in on quarterbacks before they even know what hit them. His game isn’t just speed either; he’s got the moves, the power, and the instincts to win every snap. For a team, like the Chiefs, still searching for that game-changer on defense, Umanmielen just might be the one they’ve been waiting for.
Round 3, Pick 95: Cam Skattebo, RB, Arizona State
Kareem Hunt did what he could, filling in for Isiah Pacheco, but let’s face it – neither player really got it going last season. The run game just didn’t have that spark, and with Hunt hitting 30 soon, it’s time for the Chiefs to think ahead. So, here comes Skattebo.
This young man exploded in 2024, putting Arizona State on his back and powering them to the playoffs. He’s tough, built like a rock, and doesn’t go down easy. Defenders bounce off him like pinballs. He could be a great pair with Pacheco’s speed? That’s a one–two punch Kansas City could ride deep into the postseason.
Round 4, Pick 133: Sai’Vion Jones, ED, LSU
Sai’vion Jones is built like a wall and plays like a wrecking ball. At 6’5″, 280 pounds, he’s not the fastest off the snap, but man, once he’s moving, he’s hard to stop. His strength is unreal. He bull-rushes right through blockers, throws in a slick hand chop, and never stops coming. He might not explode off the line like some edge rushers, but with a 4.74 forty and a 9’11” broad jump, he’s still got serious juice.
But what makes him extra special? He fits the Chiefs’ defense like a glove. Steve Spagnuolo loves big, physical guys who don’t quit – and that’s Jones to a tee. He can stop the run, crush the pocket, and move across the line when needed.
Round 7, Pick 226: Jamon Dumas-Johnson, LB, Kentucky
Jamon Dumas-Johnson’s journey hasn’t been perfect, but it’s real. He started at Georgia, showed promise early, then took a tough hit with an injury late in 2023. Transferring to Kentucky gave him a shot to finish strong, and he did. He was the eighth-ranked high school football player in Maryland.
His sophomore year? Well, that was impressive too, with 21 tackles as a freshman and 70 as a sophomore along with four sacks. But then came the setback, as at the end of 2023, the player suffered a fractured left forearm. Still, there’s heart in how he bounced back, returning to school. The Chiefs grabbing him late would be a smart move. If JDJ can tap back into that 2022 energy, he could turn into one of those quiet draft steals that change a defense.
Round 7, Pick 251: Luke Lachey, TE, Iowa
The Chiefs know Travis Kelce won’t be around forever, and with Noah Gray stepping up as more of a receiving threat, it’s time to think ahead. That’s where Luke Lachey comes in. He’s tough, smart, and built for the grind. Even after a brutal leg injury last season, the kid hasn’t lost his edge. He’s quick enough to slip past linebackers and smart enough to find the soft spots in coverage.
In addition, with NFL blood in his veins – his dad, Jim Lachey, was an All-Pro – he just gets it. The Chiefs don’t just need another body at tight end. They need someone dependable, and Lachey could be that guy.
Round 7, Pick 257: Shilo Sanders, S, Colorado
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s Chiefs just lost Justin Reid to the Saints, and that hurts for sure. They need help with safety, and it needs to be done fast. That’s where Shilo Sanders, Deion Sanders’ other son, might come in.
The kid flies around the field and isn’t afraid to hit. He stacked up 170 tackles in just two years at Colorado. So, that’s definitely not a fluke. He may not be a game-changer yet, but as a hard-hitting backup and special-teams guy, he’s got the juice. Late in the draft, he’s exactly the kind of gamble that could pay off big.
We all know that Kansas City has built this dynasty by drafting smart and developing even better. But with Patrick Mahomes’ massive contract and less room to work with under the cap, every pick counts more than ever. It’s on Brett Veach and Andy Reid now. They’ve got to make the most of what they’ve got because if this team wants to keep winning, it starts with getting this draft right, which begins on April 24.
