Mike Tomlin Urged to Snag 5,096-Yard RB for Steelers After Aaron Rodgers Drops Eight-Figure Demand

The NFL draft 2025 class is littered with giant playmakers. Whether it’s Travis Hunter, the Heisman hero from Colorado, Ashton Jeanty from Boise State, or Shedeur Sanders, the scouts are closely monitoring their performance. But it will be a major miss if you don’t count another explosive kid on the elite list. Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo rose to the utter prominence of the draft board in his own right. Although he kept looming under the shadow of the copious hype of Jeanty, Skattebo’s NFL stock had to soar to a height. Most NFL analysts keep him between the fourth and fifth rounds of draft. Although he can go higher than anticipated, even if he doesn’t, a $5.3 billion team can sit back and wait for his turn.

Skattebo was the pivotal force behind the Arizona State Sun Devils’ meteoric rise in the college football landscape during the 2024 season. The running back mounted over five yards per carry while scoring 24 total touchdowns. In his two years at Arizona State, Cam racked up a total of 5,096 yards. He led the Big 12 in rushing yards and the conference in total plays. But if you think it’s just one position your Devil’s Boy excels at, you’re wrong. If needed, he can push himself into the QB’s shoes as well and perform well. His longevity in the field is another dominant trait in his films. There are some concerns over his speed. He opted out of the combine 40-yard dash, but overall, he showcased his breakaway speed several times during the season.

So, which teams look to be ready to take a dime for the 23-year-old? The first team on the list is undoubtedly the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the most recent mock draft by CBS Sports draft analyst Mike Renner, Skattebo got a tremendous boost. Renner sees Skattebo as a potential third-round pick, No. 99 by the Steelers. After Najee Harris left for the Chargers, the franchise found itself severely lacking in running backs. Can the 5’9 star fit their needs?

Jesse Friedman from PHNX Sports echoed a resounding yes. “Teams that have shown a propensity for versatility with their Running Backs, one thing that intrigues me is Cam Skattebo in Arthur Smith’s offense. The way he sort of used the quarterback, Patterson, I feel like a way that he can sort of use a Cam Skattebo-type player,” the Sun Devils’ insider weighed in on a highly touted marriage between the Steelers and Cam.

Skattebo has a unique speed that matches the franchise’s pace. He is not very fast. But he’s super robust and explosive, something that OC Smith was looking for after they lost some depth in the position. That said, they are still not very hard up for it. So, they can easily use their first round for the other priority picks and wait for Skattebo to crop up later.

“Cam’s got good hands. He can catch the ball. You know you can move him around a little bit. can use him as a retarder. You can use him as a backfield,” Jesse gave a brief rundown of Cam’s versatility and skills. “People who are sort of chess pieces players like this, especially in the running back position, Arthur Smith kind of had the propensity for before. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the Steelers offense, as far as teams are definitely interested. There have been a few teams that had him in that kind of staff. I just don’t think that the league has a high priority on him.”

However, as far as the QB move goes, the Steelers had a pain in their neck.

Aaron Rodgers is $10 million bound for a Steelers’ paper

Aaron Rodgers loves to keep the Steelers guessing. The four-time MVP remains a free agent following his New York Jets breakup. The rumors have him linked to the shaking Steelers’ QB room that has recently let go of gems like Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, and Kenny Pickett. The gossip spread like a bonfire when the Steelers owner said that they were already halfway through a pen-and-paper deal with Rodgers. But as the latest intel points out, Rodgers is still flirting with his options.

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports has reported that if the Steelers want to have a chance with Rodgers, they need to keep a check worth $25 million ready at hand. It made a lot of sense since Rodgers bagged a whopping $37.5 million from his previous Jets contract. But since he is inching toward an age of retirement, the 5-10 million concession looked great.

But who could give a better estimate of his payday than the athlete himself? “I told every single one of the teams I talked to, it ain’t about the money,” Rodgers said. “I’ll play for [$10 million], I don’t care,” Rodgers sent an indirect notice to the Steelers. “I never once said I need a multi-year deal, $30-40 million, that’s absolute b——-. I’d play for 10 [million].” It will be fascinating to see how Mike Tomlin pays heed to the demand before they push for the RB spot.
