Shedeur Sanders is no longer the most sought-after QB phenom in the draft. Don’t get that wrong. The Colorado QB came fresh off an outstanding season at Boulder. His awe-inspiring numbers, the flawless projection of Coach Prime’s mentorship, and all the behind-the-scenes intangibles made him a catch to the scouts. When Shedeur steps on the field, it’s hard to take your eyes off. Most of the analysts had him sealed as one of the top three picks. But the story has taken a Turn lately. Remember the time when Shedeur stunned the internet holding off his throws and drills during the combine! He, in fact, was reportedly upfront and bold in the interview room as well. But the journey to a sigma prospect to the most wavering stockholder made the junior Sanders run in the trend. But what exactly did go wrong? Brother from another mother, Travis Hunter, had a clear take.
Handling criticism comes naturally when you carry the savage Coach Prime genes. Shedeur Snaders carries the strongest testament. The kid never shies away from addressing any uncomfortable rumors or opinions about him. Due to his high-voltage last name, expectations have followed him closely at every step of his career. As he prepares to enter the NFL, the challenge translates from the collegiate level to the pro level. During the NFL scrutiny combine, an anonymous QB coach tagged him as brash and arrogant in his communications with the coaches and the staff. That’s the mere start of his coincidental draft downfall. At this point, many projections see him hit the skids as a potential No. 21 pick or even lower at the worst. Throughout his four college seasons, Sanders completed 70.1% of his pass attempts for 14,347 yards, 134 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions. His accuracy, poise, leadership, and a robust arm made him an absolute standout among all the quarterbacks in his class.
Nobody is perfect, and neither is the former Jackson State product. But the way he worked through his limitations (patting the ball way too much before throwing, waiting for the big play, etc.) is truly infectious. Then why isn’t the draft reflecting his worth and that, too, in a retrograde move? Rich Eisen, the longtime NFL analyst, and many others didn’t get the reason. But Travis Hunter can. In an interview with Sports Illustrated published April 16, the Heisman hero pushed back against the narrative that Shedeur Sanders is riding lower in the draft box for any of his football shortcomings. Instead, he believes there’s a different angle that’s moving the needle from behind. “It’s just hating. They dislike Coach Prime, so they’ll try to take shots at us,” Hunter said, referring to the high hate quotient of Coach Deion Sanders.
Hunter and Sanders gave off the Steve Rodgers & Bucky Barnes vibe from the Marvel universe. The two have played side by side for three years, starting at Jackson State in 2022 and then moving to Coach Prime’s mentorship in Boulder in 2023. They have earned many milestones together in various high-octane matches at Colorado. So, when Hunter gave a clean chit to his peer cum brother, you better trust it at its core.
Hunter, however, has a different concern from his Colorado teammate. He is still swinging between his two-way versatility as a cornerback and Wide receiver and has threatened to exit the entire NFL b-llgame if he has to pick one between the two. His former coach vouched for that as well. But as Hunter said, Deion Sanders is the main target of the haters, not Shedeur or Travis.
Deion Sanders receives heat from a national TV analyst
Deion Sanders made Colorado a brand in a huge rebound. He took up the program at a doomsday stage and left it right at the top of national significance. He has brought winning football back to Boulder. The Colorado athletic department reported a record revenue and sold-out matches in fiscal year 2024. They scored an $8.2 million profit after five years of running a deficit.
He brought a lot of eyeballs to the program through an increased viewership. Sanders is 13-12 in two seasons at Colorado. He went 4-8 in his first season, but led the team to a 9-4 record in 2024. He is dead loyal to the franchise so far, giving up on flirting with Dallas. After all being said and done, don’t you think he deserves a shout-out? Colorado higher-ups thought the same and rewarded him with a massive five-year contract extension, spanning over five years.
But again, that word ‘hate’ started to show colors. Fox Sports analyst Doug Gottlieb said, “It’s the complete and utter blind allegiance that is required in order to do business with the president…Like LeBron James, he wants complete and utter loyalty. Nobody is allowed to say Bronny shouldn’t be on an NBA roster. The same is true for Deion Sanders.” He also criticized the coach for his decision regarding Sanders and Hunter’s traditional jersey retirement at Colorado, citing it as an effort to steal the spotlight from the program.
