Tyler Walker: Meet the Banned NASCAR Star and Inspiration Behind Carl Edwards’ Iconic Backflip

The ongoing 2025 NASCAR Hall of Fame awards ceremony features Carl Edwards. The 28-time Cup Series race winner raced between 2004 and 2016 and is known for his unique Victory Lane celebration. Standing on the window of his race car, Edwards used to do a signature backflip. Fans were thrilled by that show – but few people are aware that Edwards was actually inspired by somebody else. Tyler Walker, a karting champion and World of Outlaw star had first introduced that athletic feat. Besides his spectacular backflip, we will now delve deeper into Walker’s life. It is a tale of a genius destined for failure, but if he is responsible for his own downfall is for fans to decide.

Who is Tyler Walker?

Born on 15th July 1979 in Los Angeles, California, Tyler Walker started his motorhead pursuits from a fairly young age. When he was six, Walker took up bicycles and then moved on to motorcycles at the age of 8. His subsequent move to go-karts brought legendary results. Walker won four California state karting championships which also involved 200 victories – the same number of Cup Series races that Richard Petty won! That was the start of a fairly happening career.

What are Tyler Walker’s racing exploits?

Tyler Walker already left a mark with his astounding go-karting resume. It jumpstarted his career and pushed him into sprint cars at the age of 16. He grabbed a spot in the All-Star Circuit of Champions and won seven races in his rookie season. Walker also breathed fire on his World of Outlaws debut. He won the Gumout Series in 2002 with 16 wins in that season alone. He also won the Rookie of the Year honors at the Knoxville Nationals. He also broke the all-time track record at American Valley Speedway by a full second.

Throughout the 2000s, Tyler Walker was a force to reckon with in the dirt racing world, competing in the USAC Silver Crown Series and the World of Outlaws. It was at this time that he made his celebratory backflip wildly popular. In 1996, he made his stock car racing debut at the ASA AC Delco Challenge Series. In 1999, Walker debuted in the NASCAR Busch Series. Walker began racing in the Truck Series in 2003, scoring just one career top-ten finish until an unfortunate circumstance befell him in 2007.

Why was Tyler Walker suspended from NASCAR?

Throughout his NASCAR career, Tyler Walker started just 28 races. A setback befell him before he could carve out his place in the sport. In May 2007, a qualifying session for a Craftsman Truck Series event at Lowe’s Motor Speedway turned awry for Walker. NASCAR officials conducted a surprise drug test, and Walker failed it. Subsequently, the stock car racing series suspended the Californian speedster indefinitely. Walker apologized to his fanbase back then saying, “I felt horrible for all of my fans and friends and sponsors that supported me. I absolutely feel like I let them down, and I’ll never do that again.”

Yet in July 2012, he engaged in a ferocious on-track altercation making questionable gestures at officials and fans. But what Walker encountered in January 2013 may have been the final nail in the coffin of his racing career.

While being chased by law enforcement, Tyler Walker picked up 150 mph speed and crossed three states. The only thing that stopped him was spike strips laid down on the road. After he was apprehended, Walker’s vehicle yielded drugs – and he was sentenced to up to five years in the Utah State Prison on two third-degree felony counts. However, soon after, the judge suspended all but 90 days of Walker’s term.

Hall of Fame inductee Carl Edwards set to pay his honors to Tyler Walker

Although his career ended on a rude, desperate note, Tyler Walker still holds esteem in the NASCAR community. Following his 2007 suspension from NASCAR, Walker had continued to dazzle at dirt racing tracks. His last win was the 2011 King’s Royal at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway. Walker did a backflip around 2008 but by then people had started to forget his athletic feat amidst Carl Edwards’ rise. The announcer said, “Oh, you did the Carl Edwards thing.” However, Cousin Carl is all about gratitude and humility.

Ahead of his NASCAR Hall of Fame induction, Carl Edwards acknowledged that his famed Victory Lane move was actually inspired by Tyler Walker. “Alright, so the backflip origin story. I was watching a World of Outlaws race, this guy won the race, he got out, did a backflip. It was Tyler Walker. I was like, ‘This is the craziest thing ever’…So cool, so I started doing it at Capital Speedway in Holts Summit (Missouri) in the dirt car, and then was fortunate enough to win our first race in the No. 99 truck in Kentucky and I thought, “Why not?”

Clearly, Tyler Walker is getting a noble salute from the NASCAR Hall of Famer. This should revive the good memories of the former World of Outlaws star.
