You just cannot keep Noah Lyles away from controversy. While there is no doubt that Lyles is one of the brightest stars in the track and field realm at the moment, he is also a controversial figure, to say the least. From feuding with the NBA stars to challenging Tyreek Hill for a 60m dash, Lyles has always come up with something new. And continuing his reputation of making controversial statements, the 100m Olympic gold medalist has now taken shots at his own teammate! And he has been schooled immediately for the same as well!
Noah Lyles had expressed his wish to compete in the 4x400m event in the Olympics long ago. While his dream did not become a reality, Lyles did not mince words to tell who exactly was going to make way for him in the relay team. Well, and that was none other than Quincy Hall. Now, this was utterly surprising, as Hall is considered a specialist in the 4x400m category. Thus, when Lyles took a jab at Hall, the track world was shocked.
Expressing disbelief, an X user wrote, “Noah really said he’d put himself on the 4×4 at the Olympics over Quincy Hall.” This tweet soon caught the eyes of none other than Quincy Hall. Initially, he joked about Lyles claiming that a 15k run at the Olympics was also a plausible prospect. Next up, Hall sarcastically stated that Lyles was pretty brave to comment about the 4x400m relay. “Then had the nerve to say at the lympics we can race for 15k I ain’t talking smack tho cause he went out there and raced most people wouldn’t even step out there so hats off to him ,” wrote Hall. Surely, such a back-and-forth also paves the way for Lyles’ possible feud with Hall, after Fred Kerley took shots at Lyles earlier.

Meanwhile, back in July 2024, Lyles appeared on the Track World News Podcast. Lyles gave his justification as to why he would not want Hall on the team. “The only reason I wouldn’t use the current U.S. champion is because I don’t think he would be a starter. I feel like using him on the first leg would just be almost like a waste to his talent,” Lyles said. Such a statement surely did not sit well with Hall. However, this was just one of the incidents where Lyles was involved in a controversy. Ahead of the Olympics, Lyles stated that he would be breaking Usain Bolt’s record.
Noah Lyles sets sights on Bolt’s record with bold claims and no apologies
Noah Lyles, after chasing Olympic gold in Paris, is coming for history. And he’s not afraid to say it. The reigning Olympic champion in the 100m has drawn plenty of attention not only for his blistering speed but also for the bold claims that come with it. Chief among them—breaking Usain Bolt’s long-standing 200m world record of 19.19 seconds. For Lyles, that record isn’t sacred—it’s simply a box waiting to be ticked.

“I know that I’m going to break it,” Lyles told USA TODAY Sports, brushing aside doubts with the same ease he dismisses defenders on the track. In his eyes, greatness isn’t something to be cautiously approached. It’s to be hunted down. “World records are meant to be broken,” the 100-meter champ stated in a separate interview with NBC. Noah even added, “It’s just another goal to check off the list.” However, despite his bold claims, Lyles failed to secure the Olympic gold in 200 meters and lost to Letsile Tebogo and Kenny Bednarek.
While some might call it controversial to talk about taking down the most iconic sprinter of all time, Lyles frames it as a necessity. “We’re too easily in this habit of doing what we used to do… It’s time to get uncomfortable.” Uncomfortable for the competition, that is—because when Lyles is in full flight, even legends don’t feel out of reach.
