For Phil Mickelson, Augusta National may not have lived up to his expectations, missing the cut after carding a 5-over-par score. But the LIV golfer is still enjoying life away from the big leagues. Recently, he played against three major sports figures in what he described as “The best match yet .” It’s clear that for Mickelson, the competition extends beyond tournaments, as is clear in the latest update on Grant Horvat’s YouTube channel. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
So, Grant Horvat teamed up with Phil Mickelson to face Jon Rahm and NFL star Josh Allen in a friendly golf match featured in a new YouTube video. They played at the La Jolla Country Club in San Diego, California, with Allen participating during his offseason. Each player took their shot, and the team used the best of the pair’s efforts on each hole. In this 2v2 match, the four discussed a challenging golf shot on a green with a false front. According to their conversation, the ball needed to land in the right spot to control spin and avoid rolling off. The four appeared to be having fun, with Mickelson and Horvat playing first.
The format kept the stakes high, with each swing feeling like a chance to shine, while still leaving room for lighthearted banter. As Rahm and Allen sat down to watch them play, the former couldn’t help but praise Mickelson’s gameplay. “Phil’s calculations are so precise, it’s incredible,” said Rahm. Josh Allen joined the conversation and said, “He’s kind of a supercomputer.” Horvat played first and hit his initial shot for the hole, landing his ball about 2 feet away from the hole. Mickelson played next, hitting his ball close to the hole, followed by claps of appreciation from Rahm and Allen.
Next, both went down to the course to play, with Josh Allen hitting his shot first. His ball landed about 4 feet away from the hole, and Mickelson said, “Ok, good shot.” However, the LIV golfer was still in awe of how good Allen was and couldn’t help but add in a deadpan voice, “That’s mad. I just wanna say, ‘F–k Josh Allen.’ He’s the nicest guy, and he does this sh-t.” John Rahm faced a similar friendly jibe from Mickelson, who went on to say after Rahm’s shot, “Can I say, ‘F–k Jon Rahm, too?’”

Undoubtedly, Mickelson was in awe. Both Rahm’s and Allen’s shots were nothing if not a display of their mastery of spin control, as they hit a soft, floating shot that landed delicately on the green. But the friendly banter between Josh Allen and Phil Mickelson isn’t new.
Jon Rahm and Josh Allen share a deep friendship
Growing up in California, Josh Allen was exposed to golf early, playing casually before his rise in football. His interest deepened as his NFL career took off, and in recent years, he has become increasingly involved in the sport, often participating in charity tournaments and making appearances on golf courses with pro players. So, for the NFL star, Phil Mickelson has been plenty available in his life. For instance, in 2021, the Bills’ quarterbacks decided to dress up as golfers for Halloween, with Josh Allen deciding to dress up as Phil Mickelson. Allen attended the game against the Dolphins dressed casually in a golf shirt and shoes, carrying a metal coffee container and giving thumbs-up. He also wore a visor from this year’s PGA Championship, where Phil Mickelson made history as the oldest major champion and a notable underdog.
In October 2021, the NFL star sat down to discuss how Mickelson talked with his team during the start of the season. Talking about how Mickelson talked to the team and helped him find his “zen,” Allen shared one major similarity between the two. “I know I don’t play well when I’m frustrated. And again, hearing that from a Hall of Fame golfer, one of the best of all time, to say that type of thing, that resonated well with me, because that’s exactly kind of how I feel, too. It helped me today and hopefully, that’ll help me in the future.” Allen then went on to lead the Bills to a 26-11 win.
But their support for each other followed in the 2025 season, as seen by Phil Mickelson’s response after Josh Allen secured a $330 million contract with the Bills. Mickelson took to X to share his excitement for the NFL star: “Congrats to one of the best in the game. It’s so cool to be appreciated and respected the way the Bills do with Josh.” According to the report, Allen’s six-year contract averages $55 million per year. Undeniably, Allen has Mickelson’s support despite their on greens competition. But the question is: will we see them teeing against each other again? Hopefully!
