Amazon Prime Video has a knack for turning the engine roars into captivating storytelling. It started in 2017 with Le Mans: Racing is Everything, a documentary that pulled the curtain from endurance racing’s most prestigious battle. That same energy now drives their latest collaboration with NASCAR, laced with legacy, emotion, and the promise of more surprises. It has only been days since the news of a deeply personal tribute to RCR’s iconic Dale Earnhardt was announced. However, Prime is gearing up again, and this time, with hints of something beyond imagination.
Prime Video is set to release another documentary for NASCAR enthusiasts. The documentary will showcase NASCAR’s entry at the Garage 56’s 1090th anniversary in 2023, produced by NASCAR Studios with Tim Clark, Matt Summers, Tally Hair, and Amy Anderson. That year, NASCAR presented its Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the first stock car ever to participate in Le Mans in decades. The documentary will bring out the behind-the-scenes moments of this iconic event on the 12th June, when the No. 24 Chevrolet completed 285 laps around the 8.5-mile circuit. It wasn’t a solo effort, NASCAR, Hendrick Motorsports, and Goodyear all played vital role in making this ambitious project come true.
The documentary titled – “American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans” will premier exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries worldwide. Reflecting on its prospects, Amazon Prime’s head of Video Originals sports content, Matt Newman, said, “We’re proud to partner with our friends at NASCAR Studios to bring this incredible story of innovation and determination to our Prime Video customers. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the most exciting and grueling competitions in sports, and the work that goes into preparing for a moment like this is something we think audiences will find equal parts entertaining and inspiring.”

The aim of participating at Le Mans wasn’t about the glory, rather the ability to rub shoulders against the best. The objective was the complete the race and prove the ability of the Next Gen platform in front of the motorsports world, and they did just that. “We get to represent U.S.-based motorsport. We want to put our best foot forward. We have to remind ourselves at times: ‘Hey, we’re the only car in this category.’” Jimmie Johnson said after the race.
Well, NASCAR’s new streaming partners is all in with it’s debut run in broadcasting Cup Series races as a part of the $7.7 billion deal. While, Prime Video have just five races under their kitty, they are ramping up their efforts with docuseries, which also revolves around HMS driver, Kyle Larson.
Amazon standing firms behind Kyle Larson’s Double
Kyle Larson hopes to become just the fifth driver to ever complete ‘The Double’ – where a driver runs both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, John Andretti have had a got at it, but only Stewart has managed to complete the 1100-miles. Larson’s first attempt ended in a disappointment with rains delaying the start of the Indy 500 and he was forced to ditch the NASCAR race. When he did reach Charlotte, NASCAR had called the race off due to bad weather.
So this year, the HMS driver is going to have another go at the historic milestone and this time around Amazon Prime Video will be his official partner and also document the entire event. The documentary is set to be released in 2026, but the filming of this already begun in October of 2023. So redemption could be theme of this documentary. It is being directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Cynthia Hill and produced by Hill’s Markay Media, Imagine Documentaries, Hendrick Motorsports, in association with NASCAR Studios.
“I’m excited to come back stronger in 2025 and give it everything we’ve got to finish all 1,100 miles. Having Prime Video on board – especially with them streaming the 600 and documenting my whole experience – is pretty special. May is going to be a crazy month, and I’m ready to get after it.” Larson said. Hopefully, the weather is good this time around, as the HMS driver could loose all the playoff points if incase he ditches the NASCAR race.
