“It feels almost surreal to announce that I’ve been accepted to Stanford University!” Ana Barbosu wrote. “Can’t wait to join this amazing family! Go Card!” These were the words of Ana Barbosu, Romania’s teenage gymnastics star, Olympic medalist, and then, freshman at Stanford University. But those words stirred mixed emotions and some fans’ criticism.
For that, we have to go back to the Paris Olympics; Barbosu was initially awarded the floor bronze, only to lose it after a successful U.S. appeal bumped Jordan Chiles into third. Days later, Romania challenged the timing of the appeal. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled it had been filed four seconds late. Chiles, left in tears, had to return the medal, and Barbosu was reinstated. The controvery created a huge furore and as Jordan Chiles has challenged the decision in the Swiss Federal court. Now, Stanford Cardinal has something to say!
On April 25, Stanford Gymnastics shared a post that was collaborated by Ana Barbosu in Instagram, which had her heartfelt words:
“I made the decision to choose Stanford because I wanted to prove that I am more than just a talented gymnast. The opportunity to pursue the sport I love while receiving a world-class education is truly a dream come true. My visit to Stanford filled me with excitement…… I can become the best version of myself. I have already met extraordinary people both……. I’m eager to give my absolute best so we can fight for the NCAA National Championship title.”
The story is developing!!
