Did the New York Yankees’ $8.6 million star see it coming? Well, going by the chants of “We want Weaver,” it was probably expected. The reason behind this is perhaps the Yankees’ closer himself. What was expected to be a blockbuster trade for the Yankees, bringing in a promising closer into the fold, turned into a debacle. The early season struggles have turned the hopes into worrying signs, literally shaking both the Yankees’ management and the fans all over.
And now, the New York Yankees reliever, Devin Williams, has been removed from the closer role temporarily. The announcement came from the manager, Aaron Booe, who said, “The good news for Devin is he has everything to get through this and come out better from the other side. That’s my expectation. Right now, it’s best for everyone to pull him out of that role and try to start building some good rhythm, confidence, and momentum.”
However, what’s surprising is that Williams doesn’t seem to be shocked at all after getting demoted.
While Boone is still hopeful of him making a great comeback, Max Goodman shared what Williams thinks about this decision. Williams said, “With the way things have gone recently, it’s not really a shock to me. Being the closer is a position you have to earn. You have to keep earning to continue to be in that role. Lately, I haven’t been doing that.”
Devin Williams spoke tonight about being demoted out of the closer role:

Well, even if that’s true to some extent, does that mean he isn’t disappointed at all?
Williams continued, “I mean, yeah, it’s disappointing. You work for years to get to that point. To have that taken away from you, it’s not a fun feeling at all. But I can’t say it’s undeserved.”
In the 10 games, the 30-year-old closer has a high 11.25 ERA while allowing 10 earned runs this season with the Yankees. The struggles continue to spark debate on whether the expectations of the role are being met or not.
However, the challenges on the mound, highlighting the unexpected nature of baseball, are something that either gives us the opportunity to survive or causes us to fall under the pressure. But what was more concerning was Devin Williams delivering a statement when the fans were demanding Luke Weaver on the mound, which wasn’t well received by the fans.
Yankees’ Devin Williams’ statement sends fans into a frenzy
Under the bright lights and cheering audience on Friday, it was difficult to understand which one was louder – was it the continuous boos of the fans demanding Luke Weaver on the ground or Williams falling to the pressure, giving away a two-run double to Alejandro Kirk?
The Bronx Bombers were in the game with a one-run lead until Devin Williams played the spoilsport. In a sudden turn of events, not only did Kirk hammer Williams, but also the other three batters managed to reach the base, hitting against him. When asked about the crowd chanting Weaver’s name, Williams said, “Everyone has their opinions. I don’t have an opinion on it.” And that was it!
Devin Williams failed to create a significant mark, as he neither managed to strike out batters nor excelled in hitting, with just two hits, one of which was a hit-by-pitch. As expected, his dismal performance in the Yankees’ 4-2 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays was called by the fans, expressing their disappointment. One of them even said, “Get rid of him,” demanding his earliest exit.
Manager Aaron Boone didn’t take much time to bring him out of the mound and place Mark Leiter Jr. instead. Leiter Jr. gave a single RBI while facing Addison Barger, but unfortunately, the game was long gone out of hand. Finally, the Blue Jays won the game, and they also managed to stop their five consecutive losing streak.
So, given all that happened, do you think bringing back Weaver will turn things around?
