It is the same song we have heard time and time again, and it might be getting stale. Possibly, no one has flipped on their retirement more than Tyson Fury in this sport. After announcing his retirement for the fourth time in January, he has once again teased his return.
However, this time, the reaction feels different. Unlike previous times, when fans used to be excited for The Gypsy King’s comeback, this time the opinions are sharply divided. Perhaps Fury has overplayed this retirement stunt one too many times. Let’s take a look.
Tyson Fury with his biggest tease yet
In the past few weeks, the chatter around Tyson Fury’s comeback has concerned fans. However, the Lancashire-born puncher has stayed silent. That changed on Sunday when the 36-year-old uploaded an Instagram story with a special guest, sparking intrigue.
In the video, The Gypsy King was grinding in the gym, a stark contrast to his usual off-season habit of easing off. So, why the intense training post-retirement? “Just in the gym. Happen to bump into somebody you might know,” he stated, panning the camera towards his trainer, SugarHill Steward. The pair raised the speculations even further when Steward declared, “You know what time it is,” resulting in Tyson Fury chiming in, “You know what’s coming,” further stirring the pot.
DAZN boxing’s Instagram page immediately picked up the video and uploaded it on their profile with the caption, “You know what’s coming . Tyson Fury linking up with SugarHill Steward,” further stirring the pot.
This time, however, the tease fell flat. Instead of excitement, the comment section erupted with polarizing reactions, revealing fans’ growing frustration with Tyson Fury’s retirement-comeback antics.
Enough Already: Retirement Drama Fatigue
A fan, puzzled by the video, commented, “Out of retirement??” Though Tyson Fury and Steward didn’t explicitly confirm a comeback, the clip strongly hinted at one. Furthermore, with Conor Benn vs Chris Eubank Jr. doing better than anyone expected and Daniel Dubois getting the fight against Oleksandr Usyk, British boxing is surging, making this an ideal time for a return.
A fan had a similar opinion as he commented, “Needs the attention after Usyk vs Dubois announced .” According to him, this is Gypsy King’s desperate try to stay relevant when his peers are moving forward.
Skepticism ran high, with one user, fed up of the retirement saga, wrote, “its based on recent history then what’s coming is a loss followed by his 50th retirement .” He predicted a familiar cycle that the Manchester player was stuck in: a comeback, a defeat, and another retirement. Given that Fury is already 36, he may not have many fights left in him.
Amidst the sea of criticism, British boxer David Adeleye stood beside his fellow countryman. He commented, “Love this ,” expressing enthusiasm for the former heavyweight champion’s comeback in the ring. After all, there still is one fight that British boxing is yearning for.
Another fan immediately mentioned that fight and pitched the idea to Matchroom honcho Eddie Hearn. “Fury vs Joshua. Benn vs Eubank. Be an amazing event @eddiehearn get on the phone and sort it out,” he wrote, echoing what the UK has always wanted. He envisioned pairing the long-awaited Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury clash with the Benn-Eubank rematch. Two of the biggest fights in the modern British era.
The Fury-Joshua was once billed as the UK’s ultimate showdown. However, now, a question needs to be asked: Is it too late? The duo has suffered massive losses recently and has lost much of their explosiveness. If the Gyosy King is coming back for this one fight, because nothing else makes sense, is it even worth it at this point?
