The NFL couldn’t have chosen a better match-up to open the 2025 season. The Eagles, after sweeping the Cowboys by a combined score of 75-13 in their two contests, will begin their Super Bowl title defense at home against their most heated rivals. The last time a week 1 clash happened between the two ended in a rout in favor of the Phillies. Then-Eagles head coach Andy Reid guided them to a 41-14 victory at Texas Stadium. So, history has been kinder to the Eagles than their NFC East rivals. Maybe that’s why Jason Kelce is pretty confident, even thinking about the probable result on Thursday night, September 4th.
The Cowboys will be looking to turn around their disappointing 7-10 record last season. Meanwhile, the Eagles will hope to defend their NFC East crown and, of course, the Lombardi if things go in their favor. So, on the latest New Heights Podcast episode, the first topic Jason and Travis started talking about was this game. One that will see America’s Team go up against reigning Super Bowl Champions in their backyard. Obviously, there’s a huge rivalry between the two.
But Jason Kelce doesn’t feel the Cowboys have any pedigree left to win this game. “Eagles will open the season against the much-maligned Dallas Cowboys.. Some would call it America’s team, but it’s been a while since America’s been great, if that’s America’s team,” Jason said. Like, he ain’t wrong if you look at the recent history of the Cowboys. They haven’t graced the Super Bowl steps for almost 3 decades now. As for their divisional rivals. They have since won 2 Super Bowls while being a regular contender for the last few years.
Given the Cowboys’ struggles to live up to America’s Team status, Jason also took a jibe at their owner, Jerry Jones. “Jerry Jones going to be pretty pumped to see a banner come down in the Philadelphia Eagles’ Lincoln Financial Field as they commemorate Super Bowl 59,” Jason mused. Jones hasn’t seen his beloved Cowboys hoist the Super Bowl banner since the 1996 season when they last won their shiny Vince Lombardi trophy. So, obviously, Jones would be livid in his mind seeing the Eagles do so twice within a decade.
While the countdown of the Eagles and the Cowboys game has already begun, there’s still a big question about Dak Prescott’s availability. His absence derailed the Cowboys’ season, so his presence this season will play a crucial role as they try to bounce back.
Travis Kelce questions Dak Prescott’s availability on the Eagles vs. Cowboys season opener
Prescott’s 2024 season ended in week 9 when he suffered a partial hamstring avulsion. In his presence, the Cowboys were already in a dire spot, having a 3-5 record. So, in his absence, things only went from bad to worse. As the Cowboys finished their season with a record of 4-5 and lost out on the playoffs for the first time in 3 seasons. If they really want to label their last season’s playoff miss as a blip rather than a trend, they will need their star QB back.
That’s why Travis Kelce floated the question on Prescott’s availability once they kick off their season against the Eagles. “Is my guy Dak going to be back?” Travis asked. Well, to be honest, there still ain’t any confirmation that Prescott has fully recovered from his season-ending injury.
But of course, he has continued to give positive updates on his probable return. Earlier in April, Prescott said, “If I had to play a game today. I definitely could do that.” However, when it came to giving out a timeline on his recovery, Prescott didn’t have any. “I’m getting close to where I want to be. I don’t want to put a percentage on it.” Considering his progress, Prescott is expected to be at his full strength once the season gets underway. So, the chances of him lining up under center on September 4th are surely higher than ever.
However, yet another question will be, can he silence the Eagles on his expected return? He does boast a better head-to-head record against Jalen Hurts, 2-1. But given the way the Eagles are flying, it could change any moment. It will be up to Prescott and his boys to protect their America’s Team status, which Jason Kelce feels they have no more.
