Moments After Making the Cut, Tony Finau’s Wife Hilariously Roasts His PGA Championship Prep

Only Tony Finau could turn PGA Championship preparations into a sweet family outing—and somehow still (strawberry) crush it on the course. Just hours before teeing off at the 2025 PGA Championship, Finau wasn’t grinding at the range or studying yardage books like most pros. He was out in the scorching South Carolina sun, deep in the strawberry fields, hunting for the ripest berries, like a man on a mission.

Earlier that day, Finau and his family visited Springs Farm, a local favorite known for its fresh produce and homemade ice cream. After wrapping up her berry-picking, Finau’s wife, Ellen, gave fans a behind-the-scenes peek at his unorthodox pre-round routine. Sitting in the car with their kids, she panned the camera to Tony, still out in the field, looking like he’d gone hunting for a golf ball lost deep in the rough. “We’re at the strawberry fields, and everyone is done,” she stated. “Look at this guy, look at this guy…” she added, as one of the kids trudged up to the car, his hat in his hand, sweaty and sun-beaten.

Moments later, Tony, rocking a white tee, shorts, hat, and shades, strolled back with two giant boxes of strawberries—cool as ever. Her video, captioned, “Your hubby tees off in the PGA Championship in 2.5 hours,” quickly racked up nearly 2,000 likes and a wave of comments. “A lil pre-tourney prep,” one fan joked. “That’s me looking for my golf ball somewhere lost!” another chimed in. “It’s like going in the trees for golf balls and coming out with 20 balls!,” joked a third.

Berries vs Birdies: How Finau Found His Groove at Quail Hollow

As the tournament got underway, it turns out Finau’s trip might’ve been the best kind of warm-up. Despite—or perhaps because of—his unique preparation, Finau delivered a solid performance in the second round at Quail Hollow Club. He stepped onto the course and shot a tidy 69 in round two, bringing him to 3-under and well inside the cut line—T17 heading into the weekend. With a sharp eagle on the 15th and a bounce-back birdie on 17, Tony showed he was locked in, even if his pre-round practice looked more like a Sunday picnic. It was a solid bounce-back for Tony Finau, especially after missing the cut at the Masters just a month ago.

Some fans suggested that strawberry picking might be Finau’s secret sauce—his way of loosening up before game time, with comments like, “It kinda worked so far “ and “it led to a great round today!” Some fans picked up on his unique warm-up style, with comments like “It’s his warm-up. Clearing his brain,” and “Everybody warms up differently.

Beyond the jokes, fans were loving the glimpse into Finau’s family-first approach. “Love this. Family is so important. Hope you enjoy our city! Go Team Finau!” one person wrote. Another chimed in, “This is so great. You have a wonderful, loving family, and who doesn’t like fresh picked strawberries!

In the end, one fan summed it up best: “Tony knows how to pick ‘em— I’m bout to put my money on him this weekend.” Whether it was the fresh air, the family time, or the strawberries themselves, Finau’s unconventional pre-round activity definitely paid off. And, seriously, if strawberry picking is what gets this guy going, we’d say hand him a basket before every game.
