On Sunday night, the New York Mets were already clinging to a razor-thin lead as the New York Yankees had the winning odds stacked. Naturally, the Mets couldn’t afford even the slightest lapse. And there it is – in the eighth inning, when their $54 million first baseman made a costly defensive lapse that made him take full responsibility for the Mets’ 8-2 loss. “This one is on me,” he said after the game.
It’s the Mets’ veteran slugger Pete Alonso. When the Yankees’ Jorbit Vivas hit in Alonso’s direction with runners on base, he made a throw to catcher Francisco Alvarez that went sailing.
It wasn’t just a missed target; the throw completely went over his head. His error led to Jasson Dominguez scoring. And just like that, Alonso’s error cost the Mets a brutal loss to their cross-town rivals.

But the errors didn’t stop… Just the next day, facing the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, Pete Alonso committed yet another costly defensive mistake. Yes, the second consecutive night. This time, it unfolded in the second inning when the Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran batted an RBI triple.
Duran entered the plate again in the fourth with Mets’ pitcher Kodai Senga against him. He hit a ground ball towards Alonso, and when Duran advanced to first base, it went downhill. Alonso tried to throw the ball in Senga’s direction. And once again, his throw went sailing over the pitcher’s head.
Right during the game, the clip of his defensive error quickly went viral. And once again, the Mets lost to the Red Sox by 3-1. Expectedly, the Metsies went into a frenzy over Alonso’s repeated throwing errors.
In fact, they suggested the team send Alonso for some extra ground ball practice sessions. Alonso was just fresh off committing a game-shifting error against the Yankees; now, committing something similar against the Red Sox cannot be ignored. And of course, the Mets’ ongoing stretch of struggles cannot go unnoticed by the manager.
Mets manager opens up about the defensive struggles
After Sunday’s game, Pete Alonso took the responsibility for the loss. He opened up, saying that it wasn’t his usual side. He said, “I messed up. I made a terrible pitch. That whole inning, this game, is my fault. After that pitch, it got away from me.” Well, given his massive $54 million contract, it was a tough weekend for the Mets.
Addressing the rough stretches on the defensive side, manager Carlos Mendoza pointed out, “We’ve been through some stretches where it’s been sharp. But also, there’s been games where we’re not finishing plays or completing them, even some of the routine plays.” Mendoza emphasized that the team has had good days, too.
Well, the Mets currently stand at 29-19 with a .604 winning percentage. So, it’s decent.
But Mendoza acknowledged their defensive lapses: “This is something that we have to get better at.” Well, we will have to see that for ourselves when the Mets go against the Red Sox again on Tuesday at Fenway Park for their second game of the series.
And coming back to Alonso, he is currently going through a rough patch. The Red Sox had a 2-0 lead already in the first inning. The Mets were struggling throughout. In the dugout, Alonso was evidently frustrated with his performance. He was seen venting out his frustration, throwing his glove against the wall.
However, we are certain that Alonso will come around sooner because he identifies his errors. And we cannot wait to watch him regain his momentum at the next matchup against the Red Sox. Can you?
