On April 28, Sacramento State named Shaq its new general manager, just weeks after his son, Shaqir O’Neal, transferred in. Coach Mike Bibby—Sac State’s all-time leading scorer—recruited Shareef and persuaded Shaq to sign on. Since then, we have heard plenty of positive’s of the Lakers’ legend role as a mentor to the student athletes. Recently, the HC did a tour of the newly renovated facility, known as The Well, where he spoke about the help that the Big Aristotle has provided.
“(O’Neal) is such a high-profile person, and when I asked him, it was no thought. He has been onboard ever since, and we talk every single day. He’s throwing players at me. It’s going to be a good relationship,” Bibby said. The relationship seemingly is already working as Sacramento State has announced 11 new players, either transfers or recruits, including Shaq’s son have joined the program. It’s not just advising from afar, the 3x Finals MVP will be in attendance in the new facility.
The Well will host games this upcoming season. It’s an upgrade from The Nest, which had a seating capacity of just 1,012 people, and the new one can accommodate about 3,200 fans once renovations finish. The schedule is not announced yet Coach Bibby confirmed that Shaquille O’Neal is expected to be at the first game. After that game, “it is up to him what he wants to do,” Bibby said. But the Hornets fan can get a glimpse of the 53-year-old even before the season commences.
