Another full-field event of the LPGA Tour is all set to tee off this week. The LPGA Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba will be teeing off from May 22 at the El Camaleon Golf Course in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The event will feature top LPGA Tour golfers along with rookie and Mexican/Latin American players. With 144 players competing for the grand purse of $2.5 million, it will be interesting to see who will clinch the highest prize of $375,000. But will players have the chance to complete all four rounds, or will there be a cut?
As this is the inaugural edition, there is much speculation about the field and whether there will be a cut. Well, the event tees off at the historic course designed by Greg Norman, and it will follow the standard stroke play format. Though the course has previously hosted tournaments like the LIV Golf Mayakoba and the World Wide Technology Championship of the PGA Tour.
As this is the first edition, players will need to make the cut to stand a chance of getting a share from the whopping prize purse. Out of the 144 participants, the top 65 players and ties after two rounds/36 holes will qualify for the final leg of the tournament.
The tour is returning to Mexico for the first time in eight years; it will be interesting to see who will clinch the inaugural edition. Sticking to the roots, the event will feature past winners in Mexico along with LPGA Tour winners, some of the top 25 golfers, and a mix of rookies and amateurs.
Who are the players featured in the Riviera Maya Open?
Out of the five past winners in Mexico, three will be featured again to stay in the winner’s circle. Sei Young Kim (2017), Carlota Ciganda (2016), and Christina Kim (2015) are the ones elevating the roster. But not just them; Rio Takeda (Blue Bay LPGA winner) will also join as the recent winner from the tour. The 22-year-old Japanese professional won over Minjee Lee, scoring 17 under 271 to have a 6-stroke lead.
Additionally, the world No. 15, Charley Hull, will be seen swinging hard on Mexican soil. The English professional has been in the news for quitting her smoking habit, and the fans are eager to witness how it has impacted her game. After the prominent names, Erica Shepherd and Sarah White have earned their spots in the field, all thanks to the Monday Qualifiers’ performance.
Now with top names, a new venue, and a grand purse, the hype for the Riviera Maya Open is already set. The fans will be eager to witness how each round unfolds new performance records and course records. Who are you supporting for the inaugural edition? Share your picks with us in the comments below.
