When Juan Soto made a trip from Queens to the Bronx to square off against his former team with the Mets, it wasn’t just any cross-town clash; it was personal. The entire Bronx was against him. Bleacher Creatures turned their backs on him, and let’s just say these gestures were a reflection of how betrayed the Yankees’ nation felt. An American actor who also happens to be a longtime Yankees supporter has just called out Juan Soto for his decision to choose the Mets over the Yankees. Was it Soto’s selfish switch-up?
Apparently, when Soto left the Yankees for the Mets, the entire fuss wasn’t because of ‘why’ he left. It was more about ‘where’ he went after. American actor Nick Turturro, who has films like Federal Hill, Excess Baggage, and Do the Right Thing to his name, has taken the stand for the Yankees, calling out Soto for his move to the Mets.
Speaking with TMZ Sports, Turturro stated, “I think he has mixed emotions because he doesn’t look very engaged so far. It’s really weird.” He added, “The Yankees offered a ridiculous amount.” The Yankees reportedly made a 16-year, $760 million offer to him. Whereas, the Mets made an offer amounting to a $765 million, 15-year contract.
Turturro was visibly mad when he pointed out Soto’s selfish switch-up, “If he had gone to the Dodgers or somebody else, we would say, ‘Okay, good luck. You gave us a good year’. But the Mets, why the Mets? Because Stevie Cohen has a lot of money? I guess. Yeah, kind of fitting.” He emphasized that all the Yankees’ fans, including him, have actually gotten over the whole thing. But it’s kind of baffling if the case is that Soto signed with the Mets only because they were offering $5 million more.
However, he believes, “We wanted to let him know what we think of him. How we feel about him after one year. It’s like a one-night stand. So, that’s why a lot of people are like, Well, the Yankees fan had no business getting mad.” Moreover, he pointed out that Aaron Judge is a better all-around complete player than Soto. Yet, the Yankees were ready to offer Soto double of what Judge has—$360 million.
“So I think really the reason everybody got upset, and even me, was because how dare you leave the Yankees and go down the street? It’s like you go to your cousin’s house, and you’re like, you left me for your cousin.” He explained.
Turturro made a fair point. He has been a Yankees fan for a long time. According to him, if Soto were with the Yankees for 5 years, the Yankees fans would probably have given him a standing ovation. However, that wasn’t the case. Now that he is a Met, what’s it like for them having Soto?
Will the Mets regret signing Soto?
Ever since signing with the Mets, Juan Soto hasn’t been playing like the version fans expected. Sure, he played well recently against the Dodgers. He hit a tie-breaking two-run double and helped the Mets secure a 5-2 win. But before that, he had a lengthy slump.
The thing is, he hasn’t been consistent. He was expected to play remarkably against the Yankees in the Subway Series. However, he couldn’t deliver. Not just against the Yankees, though. When the Mets went up against the Red Sox, Soto went three-for-three on strikes without delivering a single hit. For now, manager Carlos Mendoza hasn’t written him off. He still thinks highly of him.
According to Mendoza, it’s a temporary phase. But then, it was also revealed that Mendoza had a word with Soto behind closed doors. He addressed his attitude and efforts. Mendoza has even dropped Soto in the batting order.
Steve Cohen has massively invested in him. He’s one of the richest owners in Major League Baseball. However, soon Soto will be expected to deliver with more urgency and drive.
