Senior PGA Championship 2025: Jailed for Months, Major Winner Reveals His Fears Amid $63000 Payday

One year he was teeing it up at Augusta. The next, he was behind bars. Ángel Cabrera, once known as a two-time major winner and for his fearless play, vanished from the golf world back in 2021, not due to injury or retirement but because of serious legal trouble and served 30 months in prison. Many believed this would be the end of his career; fans have lost hope as after his release in 2023, Cabrera stayed mostly silent. Until 2025, when an unexpected emotional comeback happened.

This year, 2025, Ángel Cabrera pulled off one of the most unexpected comebacks in golf by winning two big majors back-to-back. He won the Regions Tradition, and just a week after this, he won the Senior PGA Championship. He indeed rose from the ashes when no one expected him to. When he was asked how it felt emotionally in the press conference, Cabrera didn’t hold back; he said, “I feel very emotional. Maybe you can’t see it, but I’m really, really emotional inside, especially after everything I’ve been through. I can’t believe I made it, but I’m here and proud of myself,” After losing so much of his freedom, his career, and the respect of many, those words reveal the weight he’s carrying, the weight of shame and fear of never getting his life back together. But life gave him a second chance, and he is anything but proud of himself. However, behind that pride was the very real fear of failing.

At one point, Cabrera admitted, “I thought that I was going to fail, especially after being sitting without touching a club for a while.” Well,  it makes sense, as after two and a half years away from competitive golf, with no training, players tend to lose their rhythm. But in any game, one thing that never lets a player down is their hard work, he added, “But I’ve been working very, very hard, and I feel that all the hard work pays off, and this is what I’m having right now, like winning this tournament.” Sitting there and waiting for a comeback to happen is easy. What Cabrera did was different; it was the result of the relentless effort of Cabrera when nobody was watching. And that effort led to a milestone no one else has ever reached.

Cabrera is the first golfer in history to win two majors in one week

This year, Ángel Cabrera did something no one else has pulled off winning two senior major championships just one week apart. That’s right, even legends like Bernhard Langer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods haven’t managed to snag two senior majors that close together. It’s a record that’s turning heads and setting the bar higher for everyone else.

When asked how it feels to be the first to hit this milestone, Cabrera kept it real and said, “Well, I feel very proud of myself, especially because I didn’t know that I was the first one to do it.”  He was so focused and dedicated that he did not even realize that he had made a new record. He added, “ Like with all these amazing players, I feel even prouder of myself.“ He’s tipping his hat to the legends who came before, sharing the spotlight while quietly owning his incredible comeback. Now all eyes turn to the upcoming U.S. Senior Open in July and the Senior Open Championship in August. Given the form he’s showing, the chances look promising. Can Cabrera keep this incredible run going?
