If there’s one thing every sports fan needs to remember, it’s this: at the end of the day, it’s just a game. But sometimes, emotions run wild, and in the heat of the moment, fans forget that. They lash out, and the easiest targets are often the players. On-field pressure is tough enough, but dealing with abuse from the stands? That hits differently. A month back, Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy found himself in that situation when a furious fan hurled verbal abuse at him, blaming him for a loss. Now, he has finally broken his silence on the heckling, and he’s not holding back.
The Dodgers are performing well this season, leading the NL West and keeping their sights firmly set on another championship run, just like last year. But for Max Muncy, this season surely hasn’t been going the way he hoped. And the fans aren’t too happy either.
Last month, the Dodgers were swept by the Cubs, and not much later, a video went viral showing a fan yelling abusive language at Muncy as he boarded the team bus. Muncy has now explained why he thinks this is unacceptable.
While speaking with A.J. Pierzynski on Foul Territory, Muncy addressed the heckling: “My biggest thing was the language that the guy was using, the amount of kids that are out there. I just wanted to talk to the guy and be like, ‘Hey, hate me all you want. Say whatever you want to say, but let’s keep it a little bit clean.”
Baseball sure has a lot of young watchers and fans, it is no secret. “As players and athletes, we’re trying to set models and examples for kids,” Muncy added. This isn’t the first time he has addressed fan abuse.

The fans’ reaction is a given and, to an extent, even acceptable. But according to Muncy, there needs to be a line, that too a clearer one. “I signed up for this life. I understand that if you play badly, they’re going to have opinions. And it’s warranted. But when you’re hearing from your family about certain things that are being said to them, that’s when it gets tough for me,” the veteran was quoted as saying by The Athletic earlier this month.
Well, that’s a sad reality of professional sports. But there is a catch. Muncy’s form has undeniably been disappointing. Though he’s coming off his best season since 2021, he is still among the bottom hitters in MLB. And he’s well aware he is not meeting the standards.
The Dodgers lost their last game against the Mets 3-1, and Muncy, who is on a two-year, $24M contract with the Dodgers, admitted his performance was not up to the mark.
Max Muncy takes accountability after rough night at Citi Field
When the Dodgers won the series opener against the Mets on Friday, they wouldn’t have imagined they’d suffer back-to-back losses at Citi Field later that week. But that’s exactly what happened. The finale was even more painful. Guess how?
The Dodgers committed not one or two, but four errors that night, and one of them was Muncy’s contribution. It was his eighth error this season, making him the second-most among MLB third basemen. That’s surely disappointing.
“It’s tough. It’s one of those things where I’m just really not good defensively right now,” Muncy admitted to Bill Plunkett after the game. “Not going to shy away from it, but all I can do is keep showing up every day, working on it, trying to figure things out, trying to get better. That’s what I’ve been doing. That’s what I’m gonna keep doing.”
Muncy is currently slashing .210/.339/.331 with just 3 home runs and 20 RBIs this season. And those three home runs were all added in the last seven days, which may be a hint of the start of a comeback for Muncy. Well, he better start to deliver, because that’s the only way to quieten the hecklers.
