Track and Field Community Left Distraught After 2X Olympian Makes Tragic Admission

I’m so grateful for those moments sport has given me, and for all the people who helped me get there.” Just three weeks ago, this track and field athlete was celebrating her 1-year-old championship. In Rome, she claimed  Gold in the 1500 m with a time of 4:04.66, becoming Ireland’s first individual European champion since Sonia O’Sullivan. But what awaited her is more tragic than any other thing in this world, and it’s heartbreaking.

Bad news comes from Ciara Mageean, both in her career and health. She tore her calf muscle just eight days before her Olympic 1500 m heat in Tokyo. Despite this, she ran, but could only manage 10th place in her heat with a time of 4:07.29, which was not enough to advance to the semi-finals. She had to withdraw before competing in the Paris Olympics due to a chronic Achilles injury. But this health update is far beyond what was imagined. Heartbreaking in many ways…

The Rome and Tokyo Olympics participant took to her Instagram on July 4, 2025, to announce a health update. She wrote in her caption, “To everyone who’s been part of my journey so far, I have some difficult news to share: I’ve been diagnosed with cancer.
