Cubs Fans Boo Alex Cooper After ‘Cringe’ ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ Goes Viral for All the Wrong Reasons

It was a week of two pole-apart seven-inning stretches at Wrigley Field. On the first day of the month, Ken Jennings—the Jeopardy guy—was invited to sing the baseball world’s beloved “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” song during the seventh inning of the Cubs-Cardinals game. The Cubs nation was all in, soaking up the nostalgic charm of their most cherished ritual. Just five days later, when the Cubs went up against the Cardinals on Friday, it was Alex Cooper who stepped up to the mic, however, her presence was met with brutal critique.

For the record, Alex Cooper is widely known for her “Call Her Daddy” podcast. When she stepped up to the mic for a rendition of the century-old baseball anthem, she was booed in unison. As she enthusiastically belted out the lyrics, wearing a Cubs’ jersey and accompanied by two background singers, the crowd responded with frustration, clearly displeased with her.

But why exactly did Cooper receive such a cold reception from Cubs nation?

Perhaps she wasn’t much of a honey to their ears. The famous “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” happens to be an unofficial anthem across north American baseball.

In fact, it’s a 1908 waltz song by Jack Norworth and is deeply honored by all the clubs, especially the Chicago Cubs. Its chorus is supposed to be sung in the seventh-inning stretch of the game. Usually fans join and sing along. However, they found Cooper’s performance “cringe” and backlashed her.

Notably, one of Cooper’s many past controversies revolved around her claim of dating a Red Sox player back in 2013. She described their relationship as a “whirlwind romance.” That was right after the Red Sox clinched the World Series title. She never reportedly disclosed the player’s name, but she has nicknamed him the “Red Sox Man.”

Well, after being booed around Wrigley, Cooper is now trending on X as well. And, not for the right reasons.

Cubs’ nation roasts Alex Cooper’s rendition

After Alex Cooper sang the iconic “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” song, the boos travelled from Wrigley to X. Her clip, shared by Jomboy Media immediately gained traction and the ones who have cherished the tradition for the longest time were clearly offended. They didn’t mince words while expressing their displeasure.

“It was so cringe,” wrote a fan. Apparently, the Cubs nation sees the “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” rendition as a sing-along ritual. And, according to them, Cooper was a bit too self-centered, which frustrated them.

Not just her performance, but Cooper’s presence was just as equally criticized. “As she should [get booed], disrespectful to the game of baseball. No room for people like her,” read another comment. Fans believe that this seventh-inning tradition should be performed by the ones who understand the significance of the song.

When celebrities like Bill Murray, Eddie Vedder and Ron Santo performed this song, they were celebrated for it, given their connection to the Cubs and baseball. But Cooper, many believe, was not well-suited to perform it at Wrigley.

“Remember back in the day when famous people had talent or were good at something? That was awesome,” a fan chimed in. When Bill Murray, who has a longtime love for the Cubs, performed during the 2016 World Series, he was honored, respected and cheered for his presence. Clearly, the fans didn’t expect to see Cooper holding the mic and singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

Per the Cubs’ nation, her voice wasn’t pleasing to the ears and didn’t do justice to the beloved song.  “Ban her from the stadium. Holy s–t, that was horrible,” another fan commented. For the ones who deeply cherish Cubs’ traditions, they found Cooper’s performance plainly disrespectful.

“All she had to do was not disrespect it. Wasn’t funny,” one more X user shared his opinion. So, even though Cooper was invited, fans believe she didn’t do justice with the song. Clearly, the Cubbies hold this ritual very close to their heart. Cooper’s performance, for some reason, got them triggered.
