The 2025 MLB All-Star Game had everything, like fireworks on the Fourth of July. From drama and history to a finish no one saw coming. For the first time, the midsummer classic ended in a 6-6 tie and was decided by a Home Run Derby tiebreaker. But while the fans were locked in on that, the Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suarez was dealing with a far less thrilling moment.
In what could have been his all-star showcase, he found himself the target of a scary hit by pitch—the up-close clip of which could leave even the non-jumpers flinching. It happened early in the game when Suarez stepped in against the White Sox rookie Shane Smith. A ball came roaring towards him and hit him on the pinky. The spot where a fracture is highly likely!
And Suarez just let go of his bat, wincing in pain. But thankfully, it turns out the imaging doesn’t reveal anything alarming.
Suarez was removed from the HR derby due to his finger being injured by the HBP. X-rays were negative and he said he’s relieved.

Jon Heyman updated everyone that “Suarez was removed from the HR derby due to his finger being injured by the HBP. X-rays were negative, and he said he’s relieved.” Interestingly, though, this is not the first time Smith has hit Suarez. He hit Suarez with a pitch back in June, causing him to miss time. And the rookie now sits near the top of the league in HBPs with 10 on the season.
Plus, as far as Suarez goes after that freak accident, he even stayed in the game and made a defensive play in the ninth inning. So he did have gas in his tank. But when the NL selected its three hitters for a swing-off that followed the tie, Suarez was absent. Turns out it was his own call. He had opted out simply out of caution—and it makes sense, right—the trade deadline is near.
Suarez is widely considered one of the most valuable trade chips available. Not just for the Yankees, but the Mets, Cubs, and Tigers—so, any injury this close to the deadline could send plans spiraling. Bronx fans, infact, went berserk over the White Sox rookie because of his error.
