Team USA Earns Higher Chances of 4 Nations Championship Game Than Canada Ahead of Rivalry

The 4 Nations Face-Off is already heating up after just three matches. The standings already show how teams are performing, and the hockey fans might just be expecting nothing but more action. Team USA, currently ahead of the match with Team Canada, stands first with three points on the board.

Trailing them behind is the Canadian squad with two points. The rules are simple for the 4 Nations Face-Off, as the top two teams after the regulation games will compete in a championship game at TD Garden in Boston. Based on the current standings, Team USA appears to have a promising future if they maintain their current pace in the international event.

Our go-to NHL insider Frank Seravalli on X shared, “With the standings a jumbled mess, there is one scenario on the line tonight: Team USA can clinch a spot in the #4Nations championship game with a regulation win over Team Canada.” The math is quite simple. Currently, Team USA has three points after their dominant 6-1 victory against Suomi. This win did propel them to the top step, and a win over Canada will just secure their fate in the championship game.

How so? The remaining regulation game for the United States will be against Team Sweden. However, based on Sweden’s performance in this tournament, it’s clear that they won’t have a chance against a dominant Team USA.

What is the fate of Team Canada? Fate will decide its course for them at the 4 Nations Face-Off regulation game tonight. For Team Canada, as per David Amber on X, “Even if Canada loses tonight to the United States, they will advance to the Championship game if they beat Finland in regulation on Monday.”

Things might get tricky for the Canadian side if they do tend to lose this match. Considering the European side of things, Suomi is performing way better than Sweden. Team Finland will also face Canada after today’s afternoon match, which they won 4-3 in overtime, against Sweden. While Team USA might just obliterate Sweden to secure their position in the championship game, the red sweaters will have to give a little extra effort than their rivals.

The possibilities for Team Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off

Currently, prior to Team Canada’s game against Team USA, they are in second place with 2 points. They are below Team USA, who are at the top with 3 points, because of the Canadian squad’s overtime win against Team Sweden. As they have their next match against the United States, there are four possible results of the game.

First, the squad can win and secure three points in the regulation game. Secondly, they can win the game in overtime to secure two points. The third option is for them to lose in overtime, which would result in only one point being earned. The final scenario will be a straight-up loss. Now, all of these results will impact Team Canada in different ways, as the first two can propel them to first place or keep them right behind Team USA in the standings, respectively.

This will be an indirect message that Canada will secure their chance at the championship game. However, things might take a wild turn if the results are either an overtime loss or a loss. Here, Canada can only secure one or no points, respectively. This will undoubtedly present a challenge to Suomi on Monday, as both teams will compete for a place in the championship round.
